We had the good fortune of connecting with Stacey Staley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stacey, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have been a serial entrepreneur my entire life. So when my husband and I decided we wanted to move from Canada, buying a business and revamping it for our vision of success and coming to the USA on a business investor Visa just made sense for us.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
BLUXOM started out in 2014 as a hair salon in North Park, San Diego. I was a salon business coach in 2016 in Toronto, Canada and I coached the owner remotely. I always felt this connection to the brand and kept in touch with the salon after their coaching was over.
In late 2020, BLUXOM was for sale so I bought it and finalized the deal and moved to San Diego late summer of 2021. The pandemic taught me that service based businesses need to have multiple revenue streams and cannot rely solely on services. So that’s where my concept for BLUXOM the store was born. I chose to close the original brick and mortar location in 2022 to focus on getting the e commerce platform up and running while I get accredited in California as a cosmetologist and study online with Cornell getting a certificate in digital and social media marketing. Yura and I also have developed a line of BLUXOM hair accessories, candles and body oils since moving to San Diego. In 2023, I am proud to say we have a new brick and mortar location opening in March in North County where we will have our products for sale and a menu of beauty services.
I am passionate about curating clean and conscious beauty and wellness products that most importantly work and are at an accessible price point. That is what BLUXOM is all about. We partner with brands that share our values- a lot of our vendors are from Canada too. Our BLUXOM products are sourced from high quality ingredients, upcycled materials and priced competitively. I have a reputation in Canada for being trustworthy and having ingenuity and integrity and I am striving to cultivate that here within the North County Community as a service provider and shopkeeper.
Buying a business and revamping it was honestly harder than starting a business from scratch. I honestly don’t think I would do that again. But it got Yura and I here to San Diego and we are living our best life with our two wonderful beach loving dogs. As we develop our own products, and grow online and socials, establish our community and ramp up to open our new location it gets easier and hitting these milestones are that much sweeter. We have had some snags along the way with moving to another country for sure, but Yura has been there to navigate that with me and he’s a pro at it since he moved from Ukraine to Canada as a 23 year old with very little money and English. It’s all about perspective and your mindset.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a homebody so my outings are pretty simple and usually involve my dogs. So we would definitely spend a day at Del Mar dog beach throwing a ball with Kacey and watching Chelsea swim. Once we worked up an appetite, we would head to Nectarine Grove in Leucadia for lunch and share all my gluten free, grassfed faves- crispy chicken salad, veggie pizza, carne asada fries and the cinnamon bun! The dogs each get a crispy chicken strip with their water on the patio.
I also love taking friends to Better Buzz in La Jolla for coffee and a stroll to see the sea lions and people watch. We would also go to Trilogy for a yoga class to get totally relaxed before we head home and make a nice dinner al fresco.
When friends visit from Toronto, their flight time is usually around noon, so I like to take them to Morning Glory for seratonin-filled brunch at Morning Glory before their departure. Those fluffy, jiggly pancakes on Instagram are so worth it!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband Yura Prinko. He’s the best partner in life and business. He’s been there through thick and thin from Toronto to San Diego for over a decade and several business successes and failures. I am blessed to have a partner who is supportive, holds me accountable, inspires me and picks up the slack when I need to take time for me.
