We had the good fortune of connecting with Sonia Cervantes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sonia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I worked at Fortune 500 companies for over 20 years in the Technology sector. My background is in Business and Technology Sales. Still, I was inspired to pursue a health and wellness career after seeing the need for people, families, and children to become healthier. Nutrition-related Chronic Diseases and Sedentarism are on the rise, impacting our health, the health of our loved ones, and our communities. I experienced it first hand with my parents as they got older and diagnosed with chronic illnesses. At that point, I decided to get certified as a Health Coach and Nutritionist, so I could help individuals, families, and organizations to take charge of their health. That is when Sonia’s Healthy Corner was born. Sonia’s Healthy corner offers educational workshops, interactive webinars, and healthy cooking classes for all ages. I believe in providing the knowledge and tools for people to achieve optimum wellness so they can live healthier and happier.

What should our readers know about your business?
Sonia’s healthy Corner offers a back-to-basics approach through simple everyday personalized solutions that are fun and practical. I work with all ages giving them the know-how and hands-on training by teaching them how to make healthy meals on a limited budget and with time constraints. I genuinely believe that Food is Medicine and that we can be healthier one bite at a time. My educational sessions cover smart grocery-shopping, cooking, meditation, stress management, physical activity and sleep hygiene, and even urban gardening!

Sonia’s healthy Corner started in 2018 with a few workshops. Networking and joining my Regional Chamber of Commerce was very instrumental in scaling my business. Now I am working on corporate wellness solutions, women’s programs, and summer camps for the kids, It took a lot of knocking on doors again and again!

I am super excited to be certified as a therapeutic chef, where I can utilize my cooking skills to make delicious healthy recipes that any foodie can enjoy! I want people to know what Healthy food doesn’t have to be boring or expensive.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
California is a great place to be, but San Diego is awesome! There are so many places to go and things to do. | I would start with visiting a couple of beaches.

Coronado is a must! walk through Hotel Del, stop for a drink at their tiki hut by the ocean, and watch the sunset. Also visit the Bay side and take a picture of the beautiful views of downtown. If we are lucky, we will see fireworks.

La Jolla is also a must. La Jolla cove and the scenery of their cliffs is mesmerizing. Gallery window shopping is fun.

Rent a bike and ride Mission Bay and stop by for a bite or drink at any of the great restaurants along the way.

Since I am a foodie, I would always stop and get a small bite and do a ” healthy-food hoping” throughout Gaslamp and Little Italy. So much variety of yummy foods and there are always healthy options available, believe it or not!

I love the music scene and San Diego offers great music venues, with live music, from jazz, blues, or even mic night.

With all the eating, we need to be active, so hiking Torrey Pines will be in the itinerary. Strolling through Balboa Park and perhaps kayaking at the Bay.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout is to my parents. Even though they both passed, they set an example of how to never give up on my goals, work hard, acquire the necessary knowledge, and always be willing to help others in my line of work. Being passionate about what I do keeps me motivated every day, knowing that I can help people like them have a better quality of life. I also met great people along the way that I follow and admire, like Dr. William Sears, a renowned pediatrician and founder of Dr. Sears Wellness Institute. I genuinely admire his philosophy of achieving wellness by focusing on four core areas: Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitude, and Nutrition. And of course, I need to mention my favorite quote “Let food be thy medicine, and let medicine be thy food.” attributed to Hippocrates, why? Because I love FOOD! And I truly believe that food can heal us if we know how to feed our bodies. We eat everyday, several times a day!
