We had the good fortune of connecting with Shweta Rao and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shweta, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting something new after giving up on a corporate career of 15 years is never easy. Especially when the new venture is something completely different from your educational background. However what worked in my favor was that I started something that I am truly passionate about – Fashion and Skincare. Fashion and styling has always worked in my favor, so spreading the ideas through social media just seemed so right.
My Instagram Page – The Sixyard Saga speaks about Fashion (Primarily South Asian Fashion), Vintage fabrics & a bit of Makeup & Skincare. I try to keep my page very relatable and applicable in day to day styling. I am that 40 year old brown lady next door 🙂
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It is definitely not easy to reboot and restart a career, specially for a woman in her 40s and in a field that she is not educated for. But that is where passion comes in. I have taken utmost interest in planning outfits and looks for any family event since I was a kid, Browsing through fashion channels & magazines is a stress buster I swear by to date. I am proud that I get to do something that I truly believe in & most importantly, one that I enjoy.
Indian fashion is fading among south Asian women living abroad. While growing up in India, we saw the saree as a way of life, today it is looked as something that is cumbersome or something that is restricted to cultural events. I aim to “normalize” a saree or other Indian wear just how we saw it in India. Creating an awareness about Indian wear, fabrics and fabric art is what I aim to achieve through The Sixyard Saga.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This question is a little hard, since I am new to South California myself. We relocated to the San Diego area this past Summer. After living in the Midwest for close to 20 years, the move to California was a big one.
While I am still exploring all the touristy things the city has to offer (and there are a lot), I do have a few favorites. I have absolutely enjoyed my time walking around La Jolla Shores & around Old town San Diego. Both places have a vibe of their own. From the quaint food spots to the culture, this is a must do. I have an 8 year old son, so we started our journey in California with buying family memberships at the Zoo. I have personally loved the safari park. The entire place is just so beautiful for any animal lover. And of course the beaches are something that need to be experienced, not described. The hype around the Californian sunsets is real!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout to another young content creator living in LA ) Rini Jain (IG: Rinisphere) She is young, dynamic & extremely brave and courageous when it comes to fashion.
