We had the good fortune of connecting with Sherry Chen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sherry, how do you think about risk?
I am drawn to risks, which is why I made the decision last year to take the plunge and become my own boss. I decided to leave my long-term career in digital marketing, and if that wasn’t risky enough, I started my own business doing something I’d never done before — real estate. Fast forward to now, I’ve closed over $10M in real estate in my first year with another $4M currently in escrow.
Thinking back now, I am so grateful that I had the determination to follow my instinct and finally take the risk to do something I’d been wanting to do for years. There will never be the perfect time to make the leap, and there will always be plenty of reasons not to do it. Just follow your instinct and success will follow.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a real estate agent with the Kappel Realty Group at Compass. I love my work because I help young millennials achieve their dreams of home ownership and real estate investing. Real estate is one of the primary ways generations build wealth, yet, it’s a topic rarely taught in schools. I’m happy to be a part of someone’s journey to help them build long-term wealth, and I highly value the relationships I build with my clients as their partner.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a huge foodie, so whenever I have friends visiting San Diego, I plan our itinerary around the best spots to eat! Since we have some of the best tacos in the nation, I have to take them to some of the best spots. My favorite taco spots are: Lola 55 in East Village, Tacos el Gordo in Chula Vista, and Mike’s Tacos in OB (for their incredible octopus taco!). Little Italy is another favorite spot of mine for eating, drinking, and exploring. One of my favorite activities is hanging out at Vino Carta, one of the best natural wine shops in San Diego. We’ll grab Italian sandwiches from the legendary Mona Lisa and share a bottle sitting on the sidewalk people-watching and enjoying the sights.
No trip is complete without going to the beach. Ocean Beach is my favorite beach to chill out at, and it’s so fun seeing the dogs at the dog beach nearby. Kate Sessions is also a destination I take every visitor. We’ll take a picnic and sit at the top of the hill to enjoy the amazing view of San Diego down below.
San Diego is also known for its beautiful hikes, with my favorite being Torrey Pines to take out-of-towners. Where else can you hike from the top of a canyon and end at the beach? Even for my friends who have done the hike already, we always go back whenever they visit.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I could not have made it this far without the mentorship and support from my incredible team at Kappel Realty Group. I’d also like to especially thank my supportive fiancee, as well as my friends and family for always believing in me and constantly reminding me that I am capable of achieving anything I want to in life.
