We had the good fortune of connecting with Sheila Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sheila, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
In the beginning, I never thought of being an entrepreneur, and when I started this business, to be honest, it was about making money. It wasn’t until I started doing my research and getting a better understanding of the hair industry that I started seeing a deeper problem, and wanting to be a part of the solution. There are a lot of women who are dealing with conditions that causes them to depend on hair extensions or wigs and once I understood the depth of concerns, most women have, I knew that this business that I wanted to develop could possibly be bigger than money. I quickly understood that as much as we may not want to admit it for most women, our hair is our crown, and when it’s jeopardized, it can cause deeper, psychological issues. Knowing that the products I sell can help women find self love and confidence within themselves while getting help for the conditions that they have made me want to pursue this even more.

What should our readers know about your business?
My business is call JT hair. It is a hair extension business that promotes care for your natural hair. I started this business back in 2019 after the passing of my father it was something that was on my mind, but as I stated before it was mainly for profit, but after losing my dad I started to realize that there are things in life that are more important than money and after doing some research, I started to look at the bigger picture, and that is helping people care for their natural hair while changing up their look.

What makes me proud and excited about this business is for one all the research and the brainstorming I did I have finally put it into play. When you are building something and you actually see it in my case, I see it in my website the pictures my business cards all these things just bring joy to my heart to know that I’ve actually stepped out on faith and put actions behind my word.

I feel what sets me apart is my empathy and understanding for hair loss conditions because I had dealt with my own struggles with my natural hair. Dealing with traction alopecia has been a great struggle for me. It was hard for me to style my hair or even have confident to wear my natural hair out. I found myself embarrassed, and just upset that I allowed myself to allow my hair to get to this point. It wasn’t until I came across wigs and hair extensions and how I was able to wear the styles that I wanted to, caring for and repairing my natural hair. A lot of people think they can miss treat their natural hair or have anybody caring for their hair, but they have to understand that even with protective styles such as wearing wigs or hair extensions you must have someone who understands how important it is to not pull and braid the hair so tight that even with these protective styles, it still will cause harm to their natural hair. Understanding these tips has definitely helped me to help others.

This has not been a easy road, trying to build a business from scratch especially when the market for hair extensions and wigs is saturated. You have people who’ve been in the business longer who has a bigger budget so their marketing is remarkable and they reach more people unlike me it’s been really hard getting customers. I have yet to give up and I don’t think that I will because I have a passion for what I’m doing and I want women who suffer from these different conditions like I have to understand that there is help. My hair extensions, and Wig will also provide women with courage to step outside the box and try styles that they may not have had the courage to do so with their natural hair.

I learned a lot of lessons. One of them is being optimistic in a time where things don’t look as promising as I was hoping it would. I’ve also learned that I have more in me then I thought, more confidence more love for what I’m hoping to do and more passion than I thought.

What I would love the world to know about me and my brand and my story is that all three work together to make me who I have become. I have never been confident in myself thinking of being an entrepreneur was a dream to me but I feel God gave me the idea the name and everything that made up JTHair so I know it’s meant. Things may take some time but things that comes easy is not worth having. I also want people to know that my story only made me stronger . I didn’t have it easy, I had a lot of loss hardships and disappointment In my life but I’m still standing and as long as God has me here I know he has a plan for me. My brand is love it’s named after someone I love deeply my little brother and I want that to be what my brand is all about teaching others self love and if I can get that across to all my near future customers that would be enough for me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m originally from California, but I moved to New York City and I have just leave out similarities in both states it is definitely a lot to do in both states. If I had a friend coming to visit me in my city, I would definitely take them to times Square. There’s a lot of shops places to eat and just photo opportunities that they would love to share with family and on social media. My favorite place to go of all time is the museum of natural history and central park. The museum is filled with a lot of rich history and Central Park is a beautiful space to be one with nature. One of my favorite places to eat is longhorn. They have the best chicken Parmesan in strawberry lemonade ever. The great thing about New York is a ball of fun so no matter what whoever visit we have a ball

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out my sister and my father, who have always been supportive of me although they’re no longer here every time I want to give up a remember their words, and that helps me to keep going. I want to shout out my little brother who was the inspiration behind the name which is his initials, Justin Tyrrell he is the reason why I’ve made a lot of changes in my life and started to look at things with a caring and empathetic eye. I wanna thank the love of my life Raymond, who has been nothing but a cheerleader for any and everything I want to do he’s always giving me encouraging words and he’s another one who’s been beyond supportive and has always given me that push I need to step out of my comfort zone, and do what I feel God has put me on this earth to do. I want to shout out my sister Johna the support that she has given me over the years has also continue to help me believe in myself, and help me understand my potential, and just go for it and last but not least my best friend Quintel. He’s the person that helps me control the negative thoughts lol he tells me every day that I can do it even if I don’t believe it with all of these people combined I have been able to successed.
