Meet Shayna Piva

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shayna Piva and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shayna, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I had my first son in 2021 I had the hardest time finding clothes and accessories that fit the style we were looking for. Everything was always colorful, dinosaurs and loud designs that didn’t really align with our style. The quality was also an issue when shopping for boys clothes too so I decided I would take it into my own hands. That’s when Young and Rad was born. In the beginning I really did it mostly for us but there quickly became a demand for the styles to be available publicly so I began to launch our line and it really just took off from there.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Young and Rad really encompasses living a rad life with the next generation. From Surf, Skate, Moto and all things rad we really lean into the fun and adventurous way of life.
We offer options for the littlest babies through youth so we can grow with our community. Our quality is also something that is so important to us and our customers notice that from their first order with us.
We have really been skyrocketing in growth this past year which has been incredible and also challenging. Like any scaling business you have to get over bumps along the way. While sales taking off is a great thing, a big hurdle has been ensuring we can keep things in stock and scaling our production with our growing customer base.
One thing I’ve learned in this business is truly to put your customers first. We really try to include our community in our design process as well because at the end of the day we are here to serve them and we want to make sure we’re giving them all of the rad things they’re looking for.
I would love to tell any mom, or anyone really that if you’re passionate about something but you’re holding back from starting your business, just go for it. If you wait until you’re “ready” it will never happen. Our company is busier than ever while we have a 1 and 3 year old, which might sound crazy but at the end of the day you just figure it out as you go. My son was just a couple months old when I started and I’m so grateful I just decided to go for it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We have really loved spending a lot of time in Oceanside these days, we have loved watching the city grow and evolve. I’d recommend they stay at The Seabird so they could be right in the heart of the town and get those beach front views.
For food we would go to
Craft Coast for some tacos & beer
Allmine for the best pizza and craft dishes
Drinks:
Rooftop bar at Mission Pacific
Shore Room at Seabird
Wine and live music at Orfila
Dessert:
1022 Cafe & Gelateria
Parlor doughnuts

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I really have to shoutout our Young + Rad community. We have the best group of parents, moms especially who truly have been so supportive from the beginning. Many of them have become friends, some like family, and this business wouldn’t have been possible without their support.
