We had the good fortune of connecting with Sean Grogan-Wheeler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sean, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
In Jiu Jitsu it takes approximately 10 years to receive a black belt. Only two out of a thousand who start ever make it to that level. Dedication and perseverance is the only way to achieve the honor of earning a black belt.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been doing martial arts for over thirty years. It’s been a way of life for me and I wanted to share my passion for it. I started as a mobile trainer and eventually decided to open up a school. We opened our first gym in 2016 and have grown so much we moved into a bigger space in 2018. We are a family owned and operated gym. We teach Fabio Santos Jiu Jitsu. Our students won’t learn only sport Jiu Jitsu but will also be taught real life self defense. Jiu Jitsu is a journey and we are just happy to be apart of that journey with our students. We hope that when people come into our gym they feel welcomed and take away from it something they didn’t know before.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I received my black belt from Master Fabio Santos. Fabio is a legend in the Jiu Jitsu industry and received his black belt from Master Rickson Gracie. Fabio grew up in Brazil and learned at a young age how beneficial it was to know self defense. He was apart of the first UCF, taking Royce Gracie to the championship. Fabio is the most humble man I have ever met. He is a phenomenal teacher and makes everyone who trains with him feel like family. I am so honored to have received my black belt from him.
