We had the good fortune of connecting with Sean Canning and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sean, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Research, research, research. We have an expression in our office which is ‘Live by the code. Die by the code.’

Our designs are often very creative in order to meet our client’s needs, fit on a small infill lot, or achieve a certain level of aesthetic beauty. When you’re designing projects on the fringe of the code it’s very important to have a comprehensive understanding of the municipal code.

We are currently the leading architectural studio in the new ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) regulations in the City of San Diego.

What should our readers know about your business?
Ten Seventy Architecture specializes in modern + minimalist residential architecture. We love designing smaller projects on infill lots.

We are great at coming up with creative solutions, taking properties that no one wants + turning them into projects that everyone wants.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Speaking from an architectural perspective, the Salk Institute is a must see for anyone interested in architecture. It’s one of the top 5 most important modern buildings in the United States.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Through the recent pandemic San Diego’s Development Services Department switched to an online permitting process. This put us back in the driver’s seat for our permitting procedures.

One of our project managers, Margaret Canning, champions this effort. She brings 5 years of direct experience as an employee of the DSD to our architecture studio. Over the past few years she has become the best permit manager in the City of San Diego.

An integrated design + permitting process is a huge benefit to our clients as permitting is increasingly becoming more challenging in San Diego.
