Meet Saurin Gandhi DO | Physician & Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Saurin Gandhi DO and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Saurin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
TheDoctorDoodles did not come from a business mentality. It evolved from my passion for creating sharpie-based art. Since I was a kid, I always doodled, but never thought I had what it takes to become an artist. As I went into medical school, I became more serious about creating pieces of art that I wanted hanging on my walls. Toward the end of medical school I decided to combine my love for art and medicine and found that it was a niche few had been able to become successful in. Once a few of my pieces started to sell, I decided that it was time to create my own business. Inundated with original, print, and custom requests, I was able to develop a social media presence that is still growing, while continuing to make the art I love.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a hospitalist and at a major academic medical center in Texas. I completed internal medicine residency and a hospital medicine fellowship in safety and quality. After completing my training, I remained on as faculty and later became the acting internship director for internal medicine. The path was never easy, but with great mentorship and support I was able to achieve many of my goals earlier than expected. The journey has been incredibly rewarding and now I am able to contribute to a culture that embraces diversity, inclusion, and opportunity.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Austin, TX is an incredible city. I always described Austin as a place where you can be comfortable in being yourself. Not many places can you go where you see someone in a suit standing next to someone in shorts sharing a bite or drink together. Some of my favorite places in Austin include Ladybird Lake and Barton Springs – great places to run, hike, paddle-board, and explore. There are tons of live music events along the famous streets of Austin. Tons of great food, including the best tacos around, and a bars where each has a different personality, make Austin an incredible place to have fun with friends. A little bit outside of Austin you can rent a boat on Lake Travis, go indoor skydiving, or go wine tasting! The possibilities are endless!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Luckily for me, I have a ton of support from my colleagues, friends, and family. My family helped to provide inspiration for pieces and helped to create a small business infrastructure. My brother has taken a significant role in helping me maintain my inventory, finances, and develop my website and social media – I owe a lot to the time he has given me. Many of my hospital colleagues have also spread the word about my art and that support has generated significant interest.
