Meet Sarah Krueger | Copywriter and Communications Specialist for Nonprofits and Brands with Heart

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Krueger and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
In August 2022, I was let go from a job that I absolutely loved. I immediately started scouring the internet for new opportunities. It was about 3 days in when I slowed down enough to realize that I was, in fact, COMPLETELY burned out. Tears welled up just thinking about spending one more day giving everything I had to a workforce that I had given so much to, yet had spit me out like I was totally dispensable. I knew it was time for me to try something different.
I had always been told I was a good writer. I decided to dive into the world of copywriting, blog writing, email writing – all types of writing that were lucrative enough to help me make money to get through the tough time I was facing. Finding a way to make a living with my creativity filled me up in a way I had never imagined was possible! I discovered that I had what it takes to pitch myself, to build a network, and figure out what it meant to be my own boss.
I don’t know that I will remain a solo business owner forever, but I DO know that creating the opportunity for myself to build a living on my own terms, with my own skills, and to create a life that matched MY interests rather than someone else’s, gave me a gift that has changed the trajectory of the rest of my life and career. It has not always been easy – there are many ups and downs to running my own business (hellooooo client budget cuts!), but what I DO I know is that I have the resilience and skills to keep pusing forward despite all obstacles. I fell into being a business owner, but it has required much of me and taught me prceless lessons along the way.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started my career in the nonprofit industry. All I’ve every really been sure about professionally is that I wanted to help people and make a difference in my community. I worked in community engagement and education, giving as much of myself as I could to those in the world facing significant barriers to a thriving life.
When I switched to freelance work and began building my copywriting business, I decided to write for the outdoor industry because getting outside and adventuring was what I liked to do for fun. It wasn’t long, though, before I realized that the nonprofit sector was still calling my name. Making the world a better place and highlighting stories for organizations that do incredible work was where my heart truly lied. when I began helping nonprofits and heart-forward brands tell their stories, my days became lighter, easier, and more productive. I learned that Mark Twain’s age old saying, “Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life,” was on to something. It isn’t that there weren’t any challenges, it was that they were much simpler to overcome because I loved the topics I was swriting about and I trully believed in the success of my clients.
Today, I continue to write for nonprofit client’s alongside some of my more journalistic projects. I remain connected to the nonprofit sector in my community, and I spend as much time as possible supporting those who need it. What i want others to know about my brand, my business, and my story is that when I say I want to help my clients shine – I mean it from the bottom of my being!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
San Diego truly is one of the nations most beautiful cities with an endless list of things to do! I would sweep my friend off on a beach tour – from Encinitas and Solana Beach down to Coronado – hopping from area to area to show off each beach’s unique atmosphere. We would eat delicious fresh tacos in Pacific Beach, play beach volleyball on Ocean Beach, and wonder at the seals in La Jolla Cove. The next day we would rent paddle boards, kayaks, or hydro bikes for an adventure out on the water, and top it off with an ice cold beer while watching the sunset on the waterfront at Eppig Brewing. We would explore the endless pan asian eateries in Convoy, snag brunch at any of the trendy, overpriced, instagrammable spots downtown, and walk through the beatiful Balboa Park. We would hop around any number of indie bookshops, sip delicious iced lattes, and hike around any of the endless trails in the county. Because I grew up in San Diego, it can be easy to take for granted some of the incredible things available at my fingertips each day. That’s why I now make it a point to be a tourist in my own city – romantizing each opportunity to relish in all of the incredible ways to spend a day!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I joined the Write Your Way to Freedom community early in my journey, and I owe a HUGE amount of my success not only to the guidance provided in that course, but more importantly, to the community of copywriters within. Without them I would have given up many times over! Secondly, creators across the globe sharing reources on LinkedIn constantly served as a reminder that others are doing this work too, and that it is lucrative, valuable, and important! Finally, Jeff Olsen’s book “The Slight Edge” taught me that success comes from tiny actions every day, continued and compunded over time – an essential lesson when trying something new and brave that may not have immediate visible results. His concept of the slight edge kept me going on the hard days, and I highly recommend it to any future business owners, creatives, or anyone reaching for big goals!
