We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah June and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose to pursue music as a career because I love taking risks and getting out of my comfort zone. Music has always been my safe place, but I always just played it for myself in my room. I decided to start releasing music and to pursue it more seriously in 2020 during COVID. A switched flipped in my brain and I realized it was time to go for it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is definitely a reflection of wherever I’m at in life, so I like to consider it a living/breathing/imperfect thing. That helps me avoid perfectionism (although I still deal with that a lot too), and helps keep me honest through the creative process. It’s really healing for me to be able to just be honest in my creations. Sometimes that can feel uncomfortable because it results in lyrics that are really vulnerable, but at the end of the day, that’s what I stand for. I want to help people feel comfortable to be themselves and to feel all their emotions, even if they aren’t the expressions that are deemed “flattering” or “cool.” I think we all deserve a space where we can collectively let out a Big Sigh and just exist next to each other in the most pure, honest, and human way possible. I want that for myself, and I want that for everyone else too.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a friend coming to visit here in Phoenix, I would definitely take them to the downtown Phoenix farmers market in the morning. We’d grab some acai bowls and then head to the mountain. We’d go for a little hike and find a pool to cool off in afterward. Then we’d have lunch at Beach House tacos on camelback and head downtown to shop around at Palabras, Retro Ranch, and/or Buffalo Exchange. We’d end the night by hitting up Valley Bar or Gracie’s for a show, then we’d get some late night sushi at Moira.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be where I am if it weren’t for my parents putting me in piano lessons as a kid, my dad teaching me guitar and inspiring me with his own musicianship, being surrounded by the music scene in Provo, Utah in college, being encouraged by online creators to just take the leap, and of course being immersed in the vibrant, beautiful, and supportive music scene here in Phoenix, Arizona that continues to inspire me on the daily.
