We had the good fortune of connecting with Sam Litvin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sam, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted to work on climate change but I realized that there was a mismatch between people working on sollutions to the symptoms and the causes. I decided that my education and talents were best applied by helping organizations that are working on climate change to get to success.

What should our readers know about your business?
I got my first client through a friend connection as a result of Happy Hours I hosted for start-up entrepreneurs. It was not easy to get to the point of being paid but ultimately I proved my value. It was much more difficult to get the second client, and it happened by putting myself out there and speaking my mind at entrepreneur events. My latest work is to organize the alumni of my business school who are consultants to work together to get clients and help each other increase business through the power of our network and collective experience.

I have learned that in the beginning, just because you are good at what you do, it doesn’t mean people will find you. You have to get out there and hustle.

My brand is blunt honesty. I went to grad school in Israel where people are not afraid to let their opinions fly. In US this is a rarity but it is a badly needed one in the startup space where so many founders don’t know what they are doing and no one is there to tell them if they are wasting their time. Being able to be frank with my clients is why my clients seek my services. It is expertise without sugar coating.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love creating google maps for places where I live for this reason. I would take them to Northpark to bar hop, show them Seven Grand and some hidden music venues. Maybe take them to one of the many new speak easy bars. Back in the day we would hit some good dance spots but today I would be more selective and opt for something like SPIN night club if we wanted to hear some good electronic music. If I wanted to impress then most likely take them for sushi at Sushi OTA or maybe something in South Park for interesting people and Coronado for some good food. A nice activity is a hike in Mission Trails or a walk through UC San Diego which has a lot of interesting art and architecture if you know where to look.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Thousands of scientists who do the hard work of informing us about the current state of the world and the perils of not doing our best to safeguard it.
