We had the good fortune of connecting with Sabrina Mitchell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sabrina, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Honestly I have always considered myself a workaholic. As I get older I am more self aware of my weaknesses and balance has always been a struggle for me. Since I was 14 I have worked multiple jobs at a time even through being a Collegiate Athlete. Maybe it’s the fact I like to stay structured and busy; or maybe it’s the fact I was raised by some of the hardest working parents, Making to decision to get into Real Estate has completely change my life. It has given me the opportunity to spend more time with my son during the most important years of his life. It has taught me independence but also time management.
I am able to make my own schedule to incorporate all of the events that I missed during the first years of my sons life.

I think this is also why I am so thankful for my Broker, Diana DuPre, who values family as number one.

She reminds me that balance is what will make you successful. When you don’t take yourself away from your work you become burnt out, unorganized, and it will trickle down to everything including relationships.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I truly believe I am where I am in life from relationships I have built. Growing up a Military brat I moved almost ever 3 years. At the time I was frustrated but now as an adult I see it molded me into the extrovert I am today. I am comfortable in almost every new situation I am thrown into. It made me learn how to introduce myself, find common grounds and make new friends. I do find myself getting attached easily to anything that I find stable or comfortable which has lead me to ‘staying comfortable.” Like I mentioned before, Diana gave me a chance at a new better life but still because I grasp stability I was scared, Change is scary for anyone especially someone who is thriving for consistency, I am where I am today because of the relationships I have built over my career. I graduated with a Bachelors in Marketing but I think the 4 years in college I learned more than just how to write a press release. I learned how to share a room, how to manage my time, I learned personalities but the most important skill I learned was people skills.

Yes, I had it easy to a point. I was smart, athletic and a ‘people person but I was still bullied and dealt with a lot of insecurities.
At that point in my life my parents got me into modeling and pageants. Throughout that time in my life I took etiquette classes, learned to be comfortable in my own skin and how to take criticism in a constructive way.

I never won ‘best looking’, but I won the most admirable title for the Miss New Hampshire USA Pageant, being Miss Congeniality.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Not being from San Diego I still find this city full of new adventures. I have many friends in the restaurant industry and being a former bartender; I find myself drawn towards different bar concepts. Back in the day my first stop would have been WaveHouse. However , now in my late 30’s I would mark La Jolla as my number one stop. I feel La Jolla is a great mix of vacationers and locals. Both being respectful of the beach life and night life.

I’m also not one to pass an opportunity to drink amazing tequila at Cantina Mayhuel with one of my favorite bartenders, Christina.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely! Her name is Diana DuPre and she is the Broker I work under. Six years ago I was bartending at a Tequila Bar in South Park and I became good friends with her and her family. Years went by, Covid happened, I lost my job and ended up getting a divorce. To be honest I can say I was at my lowest point and lost beyond imaginable. As a single mom in her mid thirties I had no idea what I was doing. I literally woke up everyday just trying to get through the next 24 hours. During Covid, like many others, I was learning how to deal with change. I had lost touch with a lot of friends who I saw every week as a bartender. Diana being one of them.

January 2022 I received a text message from Diana checking in with me. We ended up moving our thread to a phone call and at that moment she changed my life. I consider myself a pretty private person especially when I’m not in a good place. To this day I don’t think Diana knows what that phone call did for me.

She told me she believed in me, and with her help and guidance she would love for me to join her brokerage and make a better life for myself and my son. She offered to pay for my schooling, licensing and said she would mentor me through this incredible industry.
At first I was skeptical, me of all people? This isn’t real, why would someone so successful want a 37 year old who knows zero about Real Estate join her brokerage?

A few hours later, she signed me up for school, paid for my textbooks and her we are today.
