We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryan Tesluk and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ryan, why did you pursue a creative career?
I decided to pursue a creative career partially due to advice from my late grandfather. Henry Tesluk (1920-2017), a pathologist who came of age during the Great Depression, once told me that those who pursue their passion as their career tend to have happier and healthier lives than those who don’t. My grandfather loved his field so much that, despite retiring in 1991, attended medical conferences well into his 90s.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an Oakland, CA-based visual artist who paints daring commentary on magazine pages and other types of paper. My art has reached some exciting milestones since my first Shoutout interview last year. In February 2023, I had a solo exhibit at the Hive Gallery in Downtown Los Angeles. This was my first in-person exhibit outside of Northern California and had a positive reception among viewers. Two of my paintings were also in group exhibits at that venue and Shockboxx Gallery in Hermosa Beach three months later. Last year, I released my season 1 collection of T-Shirts, which have provided a steady stream of sales. My art has also been recently viewed on Instagram by Pamela Anderson and Emily Ratajkowski.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take a friend on a road trip on US 101 from the Golden Gate Bridge to its terminus in Los Angeles. While slower than the faster I-5, the former is far more scenic and eventful. We would choose activities such as wine tasting in Solvang and strolling in Santa Barbara on a whim. There would also be plenty of time to venture off the beaten path to marvel at Monterrey, Morro Bay, and Hearst Castle further west.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my cat, Bob, for being such an empathetic and loving companion. He is living proof that there is so much good in the world and always will be.
