We had the good fortune of connecting with Ruby Le Wynn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ruby, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Since I was young , I’ve always wanted to make a difference, and as I grew older, I knew I could only succeed in a career if I was passionate about it.

I knew I wanted to work in the dating and love industry since high school (yes, many thought I was crazy…). I had this natural fire, passion, to help people with love. So, even against my Asian family’s disapproval, I took the steps to do so.

I earned a Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from USC and a Bachelors degree in Social Work from SDSU. I worked with many couples to enhance their overall satisfaction and overcome struggles in their relationship. But, it was there that I realized many couples should not have been together in the first place. Then, I began the journey to help singles find the right person for them.

I worked with the matchmaking firm, It’s Just Lunch, and I was the lead matchmaker and coach at eHarmony’s premium service, eH+. I have helped hundreds of clients search for their special person, coached those to be successful on dates, and helped clients get happily married and in relationships.

It was during this time that I noticed the big problem society was creating the label of “nice guy” – popularly known as the man who gets in the friend-zone. However, what I saw was the good-hearted man who hasn’t been given the chance. With the inspiration from brothers who I watched get stuck in these situations, alongside the largest positive impact I made with these type of clients, I decided to branch off on my own with the mission to help the “good gentleman” find their confidence, strength, and charm to find the right partner… all without changing who they are. On top of that, the idea of working for myself because of freedom was a no-brainer.

Now, people know me as the Modern Day ‘Hitch’ – I am dedicating my time to these men unleash a part of them to get the right ladies drawn to them. Now, almost a decade of having my business, and helping hundreds of singles find their partners, get many married… this is where I truly feel I’m making the biggest difference.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have dedicated my life to helping people find that special someone. I am a dating coach who helps the good-intentioned gentleman get on a date through a customized strategy that doesn’t require them to change who they are. My popular nickname is the Modern Day Hitch!

I am not your typical dating coach who just woke up one day thinking I can randomly start a business by helping single men because I’m a woman and I have personal experience. I am your dating coach who knew her passion since high school and got the experience to help you.

I worked for the matchmaking firm, It’s Just Lunch and was the lead matchmaker and coach at eH+ by eHarmony. I earned a Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Southern California. I worked in mental health with couples. I, also, appeared on Tedx, speaking about why everyone is single.

I use my extensive experience from previous matchmaking firms with a combination of training in marital counseling to provide my clients the best and most effective strategies for finding and keeping long-lasting love. With my positive energy, hope, and passion, I value the collaboration with my clients and am always excited to guide my clients on the journey to find lasting love and happiness.

Not only do I feel most rewarded when a client gets married or in a happy relationship, but what makes me more ecstatic is seeing them regain hope and confidence in love again.

Going after what you want is never an easy road, but it’s always worth it.

Let me be honest – I had to rewrite my story several times. I did not start off knowing exactly what to do with my passion. I kept testing and rewriting, and I still continue to do so! This means a lot of ideas not working out, countless hours not producing the results needed, and continuously having to think “What now?”

But, I knew, as long I kept going and trying – I’d find my passion crafted out in the way I’d ideally want.

Also, as a Vietnamese American female growing up in a traditional household, being a business owner was never mentioned to be part of my journey. In fact, it was looked down upon. I decided to take this unconventional path and it was not an easy road to explain to my family. It still, isn’t.

But, to show that it’s worth it – I make time for my family when they need help.

In the end, I recognized that my family has their own idea of “security” and “success” – and it’s okay to have that difference. It’s the unconditional love that overcomes all conflicts because when they see me happy fulfilling my passion and the difference I’m making, they accept the path I’ve chosen.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am your go-to girl for San Diego Exploration! There are many favorites spots to mention depending on the type of week you want to have. With a mix of beautiful views for relaxation, fun activites for a Bach party or young family, and memorable eatery and drinks.
Walk along anywhere in La Jolla, Little Italy, Mission Beach, Coronado, or Gaslamp, and you’ll find all of that 🙂

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t be where I am without the large support I’ve had in my journey, there is too many to credit. But I’ll try!

I had the support from my close friends, always quick to volunteer for anything I need from being my personal cheerleaders to attending single events I hosted. They were the initial ones I told of my idea and they backed it up within seconds.

I knew to reach success, I needed to invest in myself and learning how to build a business. I had the mentorship of Luisa Zhou to launch my business.

Though skeptical at first, my family supported my business. When I first started, I was not making any other income since leaving eHarmony, so they housed and made sure I was always fed. They understood when I had to miss out on events so I can build my business.

And the biggest thank you goes to my husband, who is the true reason for my continuous success. He supports me when I’ve had very low moments in it, encouraging me to build back up every time. He’s the best partner in crime to bounce off new ideas of, and he’s my tech guy. He invests so much time, knowing my business can reach amazing heights. He, and our little family, are my purpose.

Also, shoutout to the movie “Hitch” because it was that movie that inspired my full work. Though not a real person, I appreciate that character for giving me the hope.
