Meet Rubi Aleman

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rubi Aleman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rubi, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I have always been passionate about nail art—the colors, the glitter, the nail charms, everything. I love seeing how people feel good, gain confidence, and feel beautiful after their nails are done. Although it can sometimes be a challenge, creating nail art is something I truly enjoy and am deeply passionate about. I have a lot of fun during the process, and applying acrylic is especially fascinating for me. I love every part of it!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets my work apart is my commitment to creating designs that truly reflect what my clients love. I am always open to new ideas and personalized designs in my private salon, making each experience unique and tailored to the individual. I have two locations—one in San Diego and another in Playa Avellanas, Costa Rica. After the COVID pandemic, I finally made the move to open my own salon, a dream I had always cherished.
Getting to this point wasn’t easy. I always knew that nail art was my passion, but investing in products and starting my own business proved to be a challenging endeavor. My primary goal was to open a salon without paying rent, but achieving that proved neither simple nor inexpensive. In San Diego, where competition is fierce, it hasn’t always been easy, but my passion for nail art keeps me motivated.
Overcoming challenges is an ongoing process. There will always be obstacles, but I give my best and strive to do my job to the highest standard possible. The most important lessons I have learned on this journey are to always be honest, professional, and serious about my work.
I want the world—and anyone who dreams of opening their own business—to know that it’s important to follow your dreams and never stop fighting for them, just as I continue to do. It’s not easy, but it’s not impossible. Looking ahead, I hope to teach classes on how to apply acrylic nails, so I can share my knowledge and inspire others to pursue their passions.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am incredibly grateful to my husband, who always encourages me to pursue my dreams. He supports me in every way, from motivating me to continue with my passion to taking me to my nail courses and classes. My kids and my family are also a huge source of inspiration and support, making my journey even more meaningful.
