We had the good fortune of connecting with Ruben Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ruben, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process behind creating The Crazy Soccer Dad. I was sitting on the sidelines watching my son grow and get into soccer. I was watching the struggle of parents and players as they try to navigate the world of soccer. Some questions were extremely basic, like what sort of cleats do I buy for my child. Other questions were ranging from how to improve skill, how to advance when the player needs it, how do I work with a hormonal young teenager, basic terminology, and the list goes on.

I grew up in a daycare. My mom ran a daycare from the time I was about 5 years old up until I was 45. During that time I worked for her growing up, changing diapers, watching the kids when I was old enough, making lunches, etc. I got very comfortable around children. When I was about 17 my dad took me along with him to a coaching class for soccer and I was hooked. I started working with teams not long after that as a trainer, then as I got older I got into coaching full-time by the time I was 20. I got out of coaching because I could not earn enough money to support a family. Now that my boy loves soccer it was wrong not to help and volunteer. That led me to create The Crazy Soccer Dad so I can support families that need guidance.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
So the crazy soccer dad is undergoing some changes. The goal is to earn money to help youth soccer players in need. As of now, we are doing some t-shirt sales and affiliate sales. We have begun to monetize our content on social media. The big plan and this is the unveiling is that we are building out Soccer Club Consulting. There are so many little clubs with limited resources and budgets that need help. My team and I have solutions at an affordable cost. How do you run a soccer club with limited resources, and people without spending a lot of money? This is the question we answer and will be unveiled here in 2023. For me, this has been over 20 years in the making as I went through struggles and only learned how to solve all the questions, processes, and challenges as I learned from Real Estate and marketing these past few years.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So we would certainly have to head downtown to the Gaslamp one evening for dinner another night we would have to go to Little Italy of course. Assuming there was a fun soccer game going we would have to go check out the new Snapdragon Stadium. Perhaps go to Balboa park beforehand or up to Carlsbad. We do enjoy going to Pizza Port and always have.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First off I have to thank my dad for dragging me as a stubborn teenager to the coaching class. It helped me see another world. Secondly, I have to thank my mom for getting me to soccer practices all over the place. Next in line would be my wife for standing with me through all the changes that I have had to make with my career to support our family. It certainly has not been easy. I have to thank the many mentors I have had in Soccer, Real Estate, and Marketing that have shared lessons. These lessons have allowed me to be able to create this Crazy Soccer Dad and use it to help youth soccer families.
