Meet Rolando Montano | owner of Carlsbad Kickboxing Club

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rolando Montano and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rolando, how does your business help the community?
Carlsbad Kickboxing Club has helped the community in several ways. As a gym, we are a place for people who want to take their health more seriously and have been a place for people looking to work on their physical health, but what we pride ourselves on are the other aspects we bring to our members such as mental and social benefits. We have created a sense of community for our members to feel like we are their family. Many of our members who have not had social connections or have benefited feeling isolated or depressed have formed lasting friendships by coming here. They have found support and a purpose they might have been seeking. We have helped members recover from addition and we have seen other members who joined struggling with mental health conditions. The open arms we meet each member with have helped many that were struggling. We have watched members who lacked self confidence gain it right before our eyes. We have seen members lose a hundred pounds, even more, and feel like we have their back to help them on their physical path and are truly part of their journey. We are more than just a gym and are proud of the social impact that we are bringing to the community at large.

What should our readers know about your business?
Carlsbad Kickboxing Club is not afraid to be different and do what we believe in even if it is against the norm, and the outcome is that our members have trusted us more for doing so. For example, during Covid, we stayed with our community, stuck with our core values, and believed in our freedom. We made the decision to remain open for our members during a very tough time. The decision to not confirm was a tough one and we could have lost everything, but overall, our values and belief that the mental health of our members, our family, was worth more. We chose our freedom, believed in what we were doing, committed to our members and felt their support back, and we came out stronger because of it. The lessons learned were to never take our foot off the gas or let anyone else tell us how to run our business. We held true to our values.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would give our best friend the true Carlsbasd vibe. Carlsbad is a laid-back casual coastal area with swimming, beaches, beautiful weather and more. The area is about working, but being able to enjoy. We would take someone around Carlsbad Village in a golf cart, maybe eat at Carlsbad Shorehouse for breakfast. Of course we would head back to Carlsbad Kickboxing Club to work it off. We would then head to King’s Fish House for a lunch meeting, and end the day with Compass for dinner and Park 101’s terrace for some beautiful views, sunset, and some drinks.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We would love to give a shout out to Roger Bates, president of Assault Fitness Products. Roger is not only a true leader and entrepreneur, but he believed in Carlsbad Kickboxing Club. Assault Fitness, a company that truly believes in improving lives through fitness, helped sponsor our gym with Assault Fitness equipment and he believed in us when others did not. We needed a little bit of help and he helped us out. More than anything, we are grateful to him and our partnership and his willingness to believe in our journey. Assault Fitness aligned themselves with our values—pro-small business, pro-American—and more than anything, we appreciate that he took a chance on us, which helped provide value to our members and provided an opportunity to continue to grow.
