We had the good fortune of connecting with Rod Freeman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rod, what principle do you value most?
One of the values that matters most to me is servanthood—the desire to help others selflessly and make a positive impact on their lives. This principle resonates deeply because it embodies love, compassion, and humility. I believe true leadership and fulfillment come from lifting others up and leaving a legacy of kindness and support. This aligns with my calling to serve those closest to me and my community. By living this way, I feel I can reflect God’s love and fulfill the purpose He has for me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career is a reflection of my passions—helping others, building community, and making a difference in the lives of young people. As the founder of Pivot Elite, an AAU basketball organization, I’ve built a program focused on not just developing players’ skills on the court but also shaping them as individuals. What sets me apart is my focus on relationships, teamwork, and discipline, and the values I instill in every player. Pivot Elite isn’t just about basketball; it’s about teaching life lessons and creating opportunities for kids to grow into leaders.

Getting to where I am today professionally wasn’t easy. It took belief, hard work, and overcoming obstacles. I owe a lot of my journey to my right-hand man, Coach Mharlowe, who believed in me when Pivot Elite was just an idea. His support and dedication have been instrumental in building the organization into what it is today. I also leaned heavily on my family, who’ve been a constant source of encouragement, and my faith, which has guided me through every step.

There were plenty of challenges along the way—financial struggles, balancing work with family life, and learning to lead an organization. I overcame them by staying focused on my purpose, trusting in God’s plan, and surrounding myself with people who share my vision. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that success isn’t just about results; it’s about the impact you have on others and the legacy you leave behind.

What I want the world to know about me and Pivot Elite is that we’re here to make a difference. We’re not just a basketball program—we’re a family. We strive to provide kids with a foundation of support, discipline, and opportunity that will carry them far beyond the court. My story is one of faith, perseverance, and a deep love for helping others, and I hope to continue growing and serving through Pivot Elite and everything I do.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting, I’d plan a week that combines fun, relaxation, great food, and meaningful experiences. Here’s the itinerary I’d create for an unforgettable trip:

• Afternoon: Take a scenic drive or explore a nearby park to unwind and catch up.
• Evening: Dinner at a local BBQ spot or steakhouse—good food, great vibes, and a hearty welcome meal.

Day 2: Exploring the City
• Morning: Visit a local museum or historical site to dive into the area’s culture and history.
• Lunch: Grab tacos or street food from a popular spot with outdoor seating.
• Afternoon: Walk around downtown, checking out local shops, art galleries, and a farmers’ market if it’s open.
• Evening: Drinks and live music at a chill bar or outdoor venue to enjoy the local scene.

Day 3: Nature and Adventure
• Morning: Head out for a hike at a nearby trail or visit a state park.
• Lunch: Picnic lunch with sandwiches, fruit, and refreshing

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would dedicate my shoutout to the incredible people who have shaped my journey and inspired me to keep pushing forward. First and foremost, my kids—they are my greatest motivation and the reason I strive to grow every day. Watching them thrive fills my heart with purpose and reminds me of the importance of love, patience, and unwavering commitment.

Second, to my family, who have been my foundation through it all. Their love and support have guided me, grounded me, and given me the strength to persevere, even in the most challenging times.

Third, to Brittany, who has been a light in my life in ways I could never have imagined. Her love, grace, and encouragement inspire me daily to be the best version of myself. She has shown me the true meaning of partnership, standing by my side through thick and thin. Brittany is not just my rock but also a reflection of God’s love in my life, and I am endlessly grateful for her.

I also want to give special recognition to Coach Mharlowe, who believed in me from the very beginning and encouraged me to create Pivot Elite. As my right-hand man, his loyalty, wisdom, and dedication have been instrumental in our success. I couldn’t ask for a better partner in this journey.

Finally, I owe everything to the Word of God, which has been my ultimate guide and source of comfort. It has shaped my purpose and taught me to serve, love, and lead with humility and faith. Each of these influences has been a vital part of my story, and I am deeply grateful for the role they’ve played in my life.
