We had the good fortune of connecting with Robin “R. D.” Kardon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Robin “R. D.”, why did you pursue a creative career?
Everyone has a story to tell. Since I was a child, I’ve written stories. It was always assumed I’d be a writer, an author, a creative–and now I am. It took three prior careers, as an attorney, a professional pilot and a consultant to get here, but here I am.

There is no greater satisfaction than being able to write about things that are important to me in a way that engages the reader. That’s why I write novels, each of which has a central theme related to the challenges women face in the workplace. The authenticity with which I depict my characters, and the real-world, relatable problems they encounter, told with creative intent, is my greatest accomplishment.

In my fourth career, I am where I am meant to be.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a writer, and an author.

As a child, I loved Broadway theater, so I wrote plays. As a teenager, I fell in love in poetry, and I wrote that. As a college student I loved writing papers for school. Then, when I was practicing law, I tried to write clear, cogent briefs with minimal legalese.

Piloting gave me the opportunity to write as a volunteer for various company newsletters. And then, as an employment consultant, of course I had to write stirring write-ups about candidates I submitted to clients to persuade hiring managers to consider them.

Finally, I am a novelist. I write fiction based on the authentic experience of real people. The books I write feature stories told through the eyes of relatable characters dealing with actual problems we all face every day.

I am, and have been, a writer.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We’d never run out of things to do or places to eat here in San Diego.

Breakfast would, of course, be at The Mission. We’d start at the one in North Park, just blocks from my home, and also visit the one in Mission Beach. Then we’d walk over to the boardwalk, sneak over the “line” into Pacific Beach, and grab a coffee at one of the many beachfront shops.

Hiking would be an important aspect of this trip. We’d start in Florida Canyon, visit San Dieguito Lagoon and of course Mission Trails Regional Park. My favorite is Annie’s Canyon, but we’d surely visit the Dog Beach in Del Mar.

Downtown shopping would include a visit to Seaport Village, the Midway Museum and the famous Unconditional Surrender (Kissing Statue).

San Diego has a Farmer’s Market somewhere every single day. So, we’d find one, taste the local fare, and buy fresh veggies to grill in my back yard.

Sunsets are a “thing” here, and La Jolla has a wonderful downtown area where we can shop, and then stop in at George’s on the Cove to watch the sun go down.

I love tennis, so we’d play a few matches, and then sit in the bleachers at Balboa Tennis Club and watch a few more.

Dinner could be at any one of the many terrific restaurants. Casual dining al fresco at Dunedin New Zealand Eats in North Park, or pizza across the street at Lefty’s. An upscale dinner with an amazing view at Island Prime, and then the next night we could walk a few steps away and eat Mexican fusion at Coasterra.

A week will pass like a moment here in the best place to live in the world.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Without San Diego Writers, Ink., www.sandiegowriters.org, I would not have had the tools to become an author. Their supportive community and educational offerings have had a tremendous impact on my success.
