We had the good fortune of connecting with Roberto Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Roberto, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
It happened naturally. After moving to Los Angeles from Barcelona, I started shooting interiors as a freelance for Airbnb. This allowed me to land in the US while creating a good client network.  After a couple of years, I was shooting for other companies and professionals such as interior designers and architects. Then the business side of my work grew accordingly.

My work background in Spain was in other fields of photography such as live music and runway photography during the fashion weeks in Milan and Paris. I started shooting interiors in Barcelona around 2011.

I also worked as a producer for a top advertising photo studio from Barcelona which gave me a broad perspective about the whole photography business from the beginning to the end. I think, in life, things happen for a reason.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It has been a slow process of constantly learning and growing professionally over the last 8 years. From working on simple photo shoots to shooting design projects in long days. It has been a realization process where I became aware of the need to be more professional and focus on the way I photograph. Paying attention to how light works, choosing the right angles, and paying more attention to the small details. Working with a coach was also key. I thank Tony Colangelo for the lessons he gave me. I have also taken several cinematography classes that helped me understand composition better, understanding what makes an image good or bad . Your eye also learns to SEE over time.
These were things that helped me progress more in my field, find better jobs and get better results.

I have been trying to develop my own style, which I prefer to look natural and artistic, enhancing the design ideas I photograph. I am proud of some of the jobs I have done for Netflix and some interesting interior design projects that have been published lately in magazines in the US and South America.

This whole process is rather painful and has its ups and downs. For me, the trick is to always be open to learning more and do your best at every job.

In fact, my next step is moving back to Spain to study a Masters’s degree in Architectural Photography.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love being a guide in Los Angeles when people visit me. I would take them to see the big houses in Beverly Hills and drive along Mullholand Drive for the views. Also, I love showing them Broadway in DTLA, the old theaters, and the beautiful architecture. I love the Bradbury building and Grand Central Market (although too crowded these days). One of my favorite places in the Arts District is Zinc Cafe, with its olive trees and spacious garden. I have lived in Koreatown for the last 4 years so this is also a good place to explore.

One of the amazing things about LA is the different ecosystems you can go to.

Other highlights are Griffith Observatory, Fairfax Farmers Market, Beachwood drive to take the Hollywood sign picture, and driving Sunset Boulevard from Echo Park to the ocean.

Another trip not to be missing is driving to the desert, Palms Springs, and the High Desert.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My sister Susana, for always supporting my work and encouraging me to keep on going and learning, and Tony Colangelo for helping me understand how to become a better photographer and finding my own style.
