Meet Riley Hubbard | Owner/winemaker of Hubba Wines

We had the good fortune of connecting with Riley Hubbard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Riley, what is the most important factor behind your success?
My family! They support me continuously and inspire me to do my best always! And they are really great grape sorters:) My winery is named after our family name and all of my wines are named after various family nicknames. If you are lucky, my “Mutha”, Bridget, will host you when you come to the winery.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I care about wine that is made with intention and make the wine I love to drink. I aim to be mindful every step of the way and make wine as naturally as possible. To me, that means choosing sustainable vineyards with viticulture practices I respect, making wine with minimal intervention and attempting to avoid dogmatism. In my opinion, wine is all about pleasure and that is what fuels my passion for making, drinking and sharing it with the people I love. I am where I am today because of my community. My relationships with family, friends and mentors mean the most to me in my life and my wines are an homage to those people who continue to inspire me.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Weekends are spent at the tasting room at Hubba Wines, drinking Bristol’s Cider and eating Lebber’s Pizza. When I get a day off I head to the beach or try to bop up to Big Sur.
Libretto is a basement music venue with a 10 ft. Steinway piano and world renowned musicians. You have to check it out!
Amstrdm is my go to coffee spot. There is so much good food in Paso it is so hard to choose! But I would say my favorites are FINCA, Paso Robles Wine Merchant and Goshi’s for lunch. The Hatch, Les Petites Canailles, and In Bloom for dinner.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Stephan Asseo of L’aventure winery taught me how to make wine and is the reason I do what I do!
