We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecca Del Secco and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rebecca, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
Over the past 7 years, I’ve dedicated myself to strategically growing and sustaining Civility Partners. When I first started as an intern, we were a small team of 3. Now we have an internal staff running the business and a team of experts partnering with clients to build positive work environments for employees across the globe. This experience has inspired me to dive deeper into developing small businesses and solopreneurs that make a difference in organizations and the community. All that to say, coaching driven and meaningful small businesses to grow and have a greater impact on the world is the end goal.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started my career as an HR intern at Civility Partners. At the time, the only other employees were the CEO and a part-time marketing assistant. What was supposed to be a 2-month HR internship turned into a 7 year journey that is still in progress. Naturally being in a small business, I wore the proverbial “a lot of hats” my first few years. Pretty quickly I was able to support all aspects of the business and I fell in love with the impact of the work I was doing both internally and for clients. I like to say now that I am a professional chameleon because I said “yes” to taking on new challenges and tasks and learned to do them well. I’ve been an HR Assistant, Account Manager, Content Diva, People and Culture Consultant, Interim CEO and now am the Chief Operations Officer. I’m proud of how far I’ve come and the impact I’ve been able to make in all my roles.
My journey, like most, had its challenges. To overcome these challenges, I did a couple of things:
Surrounded myself with mentors and champions who I respected. This includes my current CEO, business coaches, other solopreneurs and more. Their advice, support and occasional tough love has been invaluable.
Shifted my mindset around mistakes. Rather than seeing them as failures, I told myself they were learning opportunities. Not only did this help my mental health it was another way for me to harness new growth.
Leaned into discomfort. During a recent discussion someone said that if they aren’t feeling uncomfortable they aren’t growing. It is natural to flee from discomfort, but I found allowing myself to be uncomfortable skyrocketed my personal development. Plus, if you lean into it, eventually that discomfort subsides.
I’d venture to guess that there are people like me out there who love to learn and haven’t necessarily been on one career trajectory. At times, I questioned myself and wondered why there wasn’t one job that was my calling. Now, I’ve found that being a chameleon was my calling and helping an organization grow and flourish was my role all along. The key – finding an organization that matches your values and does meaningful work, whatever that looks like for you.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout goes to two people. First would be my CEO and friend, Catherine Mattice. She hired me 7 years ago and has done nothing but support me personally and professionally, challenge me, and help me grow. I would not be here today without her dedication to my success.
Second would be my executive coach, Natalie Barron. A couple of years ago, I found imposter syndrome continuing to rear its ugly head. My CEO brought Natalie in to work 1:1 with me on my confidence and executive presence. Since working with her, I have not only become more confident and empowered both personally and professionally, I have also become a better person and leader.
