We had the good fortune of connecting with Ramon Payne and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ramon, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
180%
I moved to Los Angeles from Washington, DC, 7 years ago, and everyone who knew me thought I was crazy, because, as Stephen Covey, put it, Danger in the Comfort Zone, it was, living in DC and doing very well, I must say in my profession and being prolific as a playboy around town.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was blessed to be born with some great natural attributes, let alone my birthday, is September, 11th, the Egyptian New Year, Im a huge history buff, so that means alot to me spiritually, and most of my superpowers are related to the arts of life. I started exploring gymnastics as a youth, in second grade, and I practiced daily on my bed whereas, I didn’t have a bedframe, so I could practice quite readily when the parents were not home. I was inspired by Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris and Mary Lou Retton, gold medal Olympic gymnast, as a youth, so I wanted to be the best gymnast and martial artist I could be as a kid, and I practiced very hard at it. I did my first backwards flip on the playground, in second grade and I never looked back. I became so good at it, that kids in other neighborhoods would try to compete all the time, on heplayground, street corners, alleys, it didnt matter, it went down whereever, and kids would travel from other neighborhoods to ‘battle’ me, and I never lost a competition. I battled many kids from different neighborhoods because I moved every year until 7th grade. I made a lot of friends so to say, and I never had a hard time making them either. Learning gymnastics and mastering it at any early age, instilled confidence in me that still lasts to this day. Boys are very competitive and I didn’t have much regarding cool clothes, etc and because i was of small frame and of lighter skin than my friends I was constantly having to prove myself. I had a young mother and step dad, and we always were on State assistance aka welfare. The confidence I obtained with being known as a ninja in the streets, lasts to this day, and many remember me from those days, and I can still do most of what I could do back then, today regarding gymnastics. I would do ‘flips’ as we called it, not gymnastics, and mix it with ‘breakdancing’ as a combo competition event. This was how youth in the eighties lived and it was a beautiful time and I was in the heart of it. I am very adept at Math and Science as well. I was an Honor Roll student thru out grade school, and Math was always a strong attribute. I remember learning my times tables in second grade and it was a rap after that. I started understanding patterns and sequences early and my problem solving ability was way ahead of the curve. A big reason I went to college for Accounting as well being adept at Math. I went to undergrad on a full Honors scholarship, so my critical thinking skills were a tad better than my peers always. One of my most accomplished accolades, was definitely obtaining my full academic scholarship to Morgan State University in 1992.
I have a knack with women as well. They tend to feel comfortable around me, which many say is a superpower, but I just learned how to listen to them and respond accordingly.
After I graduated from Morgan State, I worked as an Accountant in the DC area for roughly ten years, decided it was not in my heart and decided to test my coolness and smarts in Hollywood, but I knew I would need a great second career to accompany my dream job. Massage Therapy became my ultimate part time career, which has truly changed my life, because it has made me take charge of my physical, like no other and be more kind to humans and be more empathetic to human trial and tribulation. When I first decided to make that transition it was not popular, amongst my family or friends, so I literally ventured into the unknown with no moral support, but 19 years later, they all wished they did the same thing. It wasn’t hard in the literal sense bc no matter the struggle is was all for something passionate to my heart and even on my broke, broke days, I smile and love life because my everyday is a beautiful thing. To put smiles on the faces of my clients, is the best feeling in the world.
I learned there is nothing more important than patience, hardwork, purpose, passion and consistency. The most important of those is purpose because the passionate energy that comes with purpose is infinite. Many thought I couldn’t do it, and especially the way, that I am doing it. I told many, I will not buy a car when I move to LA, and I still have not, & years later, and I have many women as friends, so everyones assessment that I needed a car for a plentiful dating life, still are learning, not all rules apply to all. I’ve learned if you are doing what your purpose has intended for your soul, the money will come, the opportunities will come and you will be loved for every bit of it. I saw too many humans growing up especially my grandmother work for the government for 30 plus years, and the results were something I never wanted to have as an adult. After sleeping on couches, being homeless, and putting that blood, sweat and tears to the max, no challenge will ever be too grand, because as long as you can breathe, you are in control. Different times, my grandmother came up in yet no generational evolution happens until we make the changes necessary. I never wanted to be known for the norm. I could’ve easily went to college for sports, Nope. That was the norm and too easy actually. I was an all star athlete in elementary, middle and HS, plus I was at the top of my class scholastically. I learned early, that the inner is what I need to sharpen to get the gold, and you have to be smart with how you move. Being at the top of the Accounting game, showed me how to live in America, and my childhood showed me how to be a man, yet, being forty plus, with a child showed me there is no other joy in life like being a parent. Being able to show him the ropes and see it manifest each year, uncanny. There is no handbook for parenting, and thats the part I love because like Entertainment, I have to use all of my senses and abilities, all the time.
Lessons, I learned in life: always, listen to your heart. Knowledge is the real power and wisdom is the tendency to use that knowledge learned consistently. Have purpose, because without, you are chaos.
I want the world to know that we are masters of our own universes, when we use our powers for good, and allow others to be in your universe bc like the sun and the planet, all of it is needed. Pay it forward consistently and have great intent in whatever it is you manifest.
My brand is BE and Beyond, LLC, the BE stands for ‘Balanced Essentials’ meaning all that I offer will be applicable in any time, space or quantum level, and that all I offer are blessings and fundamentals that govern the multiverse.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is easy, because I had a friend from the East Coast come during the pandemic to see what LA is all about. I would have them take the shuttle to Aviation/LAX subway station, and meet them there. Let them smell the fresh air, and explore LA like its supposed to be explored from the bottom to the top. I always have my guests ride the subway and bus, one to understand you can and its cheaper, and there are plenty of shuttles that take you from LAX to the subway. Everything is about cost to me, so even if you are renting a car, know you can shuttle from LAX and save much more money that way. Visit all the essentials, Hollywood sign, Palos Verdes cliffs, Mailbu, downtown and Santa monica pier, but also visit Crenshaw and Manchester to feel what the urban side is like and go by the Forum, to visit the new Inglewood. Most of these will be visited by public transportation so you can feel the real LA, and uber and lyft when neccessary. Seeing and interacting w the real LA public, most people love in lieu of the TMZ, Hollywood pseudo feel. I take all of my friends on a real live tour of the city and they always love it. I grew up in the urban side of life, so I love to ensure that rawness is felt in any city. Happy hour spots in Hollywood and SaMO would def b of interest and since I do stand up comedy, Comedy Store would get some action as well. By the end of the week, we wouldve hiked a few miles in PV or Kenneth Hahn, and seen at least three to four attractions, and I am a massage therapist of 20 years, so you def would get a massage at the end to feel rejuvenated. Not to mention, I have a few celebrity friends as clients, so if timing is right, 🙂
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate a lot of inspiration for my risk taking to Dr. Frances Cress Welsing, author of the book, The Isis Papers and Ptah hotep, author of, the Maxims of Ptah. He was a vizier of Ancient Egypt to many pharaohs and lived to be 125 years old, 3000 plus years ago.
