We had the good fortune of connecting with Q Tha Elevated and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Q, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born in Wichita, KS, and spent some years living back and forth between there and the Chicago West side, where my father lived. Wichita is obviously not one of the largest cities, but it is one of the most diverse in terms of cultural influences, so the people keep the city interesting. I grew up on the North side of town, which for us was basically the hood (lol), not the worst parts, but close enough that the negative impacts of poverty still tip-toed in the neighborhood, and frequently. Some had it worse, and I’m forever grateful that my mother never stopped pursuing a better lifestyle. Growing up I had to learn adult responsibility at an incredibly young age. My little brother has Autism, and requires constant assistance. My mother found out a year after he was born; I was about seven years old when life to a major turn. By the time I was eight, I helped with changing diapers and baths, and by the time I was ten, I was the babysitter for both of younger siblings while my mother took on multiple jobs to keep the lights on.
I couldn’t see friends as often and lacked many social skills. By the time I started middle school, the friends I did make were mostly gang affiliated, and although I never joined, I brushed elbows with the consequences of the lifestyle more times than I’d like to count. If it wasn’t for my little brother and music, who knows what I would’ve chose, but I was a knuckle head even still.
I’d have to say my mother and little brother are the pinnacle for every success I’ve ever had in life, and the reason I don’t accept failure. My Goal in life is to ensure that the two of them are fully taken care of.
And because I’ve decided I want a comfortable life as well, I’m working that much harder and smarter to achieve the goals I’ve set, and go beyond them. My brother is my inspiration to keep going, because he never had the opportunity to do as much. He’s my battery.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
So in 2020 I took a trip to Brooklyn to see a friend. I’d been in Texas for so long and hadn’t traveled anywhere for at least 4 years at this point. Not anywhere like the cities that I love such as brooklyn, Oakland, Chicago, Philly, ect. Cities with vibes like that always give me a space to recognize what’s new. As I was chilling and smoking on my friends balcony (which had a dope ass view, I went over titles in my head knowing for about a couple months that I wanted to create a new company. I kept playing with words because I knew I wanted the word elevated in there since it became my favorite new thing to explore after heavily tapping into meditation that year. I wanted a brand that would reflect the way my life was changing and the trajectory in which I would like it to go. And then it happened, EMC. As in e equals MC² by the famous Einstein, and whom we borrowed the name MC². It all made sense right then and there, EMC = “Elevated Media Co.” It’s been a vibe ever since.
Elevated Media Co. Is a brand that embraces elevation on multiple levels of life. Life is a complex thing there are many parts of who we are that makes us a whole person, many experiences, thoughts, comprehensions, and even ignorance whether natural or intentional… Overtime all these things help you mold who You are. As I mentioned before, Olson said, choice is a power and the tool that we can all utilize every single day. So to elevate literally means reaching a higher State of mind and Spirit, “You can always elevate,” is my current slogan. This means that no matter what is going on in your life you can always choose to be a better version of you in every field, with every new experience. All we ever have is right now.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have a few favorite spots in San Antonio. As a foodie I like to eat and drink in spots that are tucked away, hole-in-the wall, gems— the type of places people know about but you have to know someone who already knows.
We first hit one of the local Taco spots because this is San Antonio Texas and it’s illegal to not eat tacos when you first come here. It doesn’t really even matter which one because they’re all just about equally amazing but I do have one taco truck in particular called Guerro’s. They slap every-single-time!
My favorite bar is called The Modernist, which is right on me outside of downtown San Antonio and uptown I believe, it literally is a house that somebody converted into a bar and did not put any signs of except the words “The Modernist” on a mailbox outside. When you go in, the speakeasy style is hard to say no to, and the bartenders are the best in the city, hands down.
As far as restaurants go, my new favorite spot is this place called Dashii, a Szechuan scratch kitchen that has some of the most flavorful food of ever had in my life, Shout-out to Dashii!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
So many people can be named right now, so many pools of inspiration and wisdom. I’ll only name two for time. The first, is a book by author Jeff Olson, entitled, The Slight Edge. That book taught me the power of consistency and most importantly, the power of choice. As in, choice is the only true power we possess, we make decisions constantly. Secondly, my Tribe. 🖖🏾
Just like siblings, we help keep each other grounded, especially since we’re all creatives. Be it production, music theory, songwriting, or the stumbles and triumphs of life— we talk. And that makes a world of difference to have a safe and productive space to seek wisdom. Tribe is Elevated.
