Meet Philip Ernest | Front man of Poems” “

We had the good fortune of connecting with Philip Ernest and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Philip, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
For us, pursuing a career in the arts came together when we formed a friendship together first. We all started hanging out and realized we all had a passion for music but didn’t know what that would look like as a career. It was almost more of a pastime while we weren’t working or being college students.
Once we officially formed our project “Poems”, we quickly realized that not only were we good at it, but it was the one thing we all saw ourselves doing long-term. Pursuing a career in the arts comes with many challenges both logistically and mentally, for us, we always have conquered those with the thought of “If not this, what else”? 9 to 5 is a phrase that has always met us with a certain uneasiness.
Pursuing our career in music here in San Diego has been the greatest choice we have made yet. While it has proven challenging at times, we always can see the good outweighing the bad, and that plus our passion for making music is what pushes us to reach that next level every day.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Right now, we are excited to say that we are putting the final touches on our debut EP which will be arriving this spring time. We are so thrilled to be able to put together a collection of songs we have been working on that we feel represents us as a Southern California band and an insight into where our sound is headed. It can be challenging to gather songs written over a long period and bring them together into one single project, we feel we were able to do this with our debut EP. Each song gives the feeling of the freedom you feel while driving down the Coast of California without a worry on your mind. We are excited to share this feeling with our listeners.
Over the summer of 2024, we plan to be pushing this EP with shows around San Diego and we would love to have everyone be a part of this. Make sure to stay up to date on our events via our social media platforms so we can connect in person.
We as a band like to focus on the human connection aspect of music. It’s always a blast to perform for a crowd, but the other part we enjoy is connecting face-to-face after the show and forming relationships. We feel that can be something that sets us apart.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Great question! So many fun spots around the city to eat, drink, and listen to live music! I would say if you are looking for a great intimate style show with great sound hit up The Music Box and The Belly Up! These both have great local acts they promote all the time as well as touring acts. We would recommend going to Part-Time Lover afterward as well for great cocktails and an unmatched vibe! We as a band spend a lot of time in North Park, from the Observatory for music to the nine or ten different coffee shops, there is no shortage of places to visit.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
For us, we truly wouldn’t be able to do this without our friends, fans, and the amazing music community here in San Diego! They support us every chance they get by showing up to our shows, streaming, and sharing our music. We have so many amazing venues here in San Diego that take a chance on bands and that is a big deal for up-and-coming artists to get the word out and give them a place to create. Making music is only part of the journey, you have to be able to create relationships with fans and other projects along the way or no one will be there when the show starts. That’s why this shoutout goes to everyone who has supported us along our journey here in San Diego, we are so excited to see where it takes us down the road and are so happy to have a community to be behind us all the way.
