We had the good fortune of connecting with Paul Esteban and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Paul, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
In my journey through architecture, I’ve come to embrace the idea of “failing faster” as a powerful catalyst for growth. It’s not just about avoiding mistakes, but about diving headfirst into challenges and learning from them along the way.

Early in my career, I realized that success isn’t about getting everything right on the first try; it’s about having the courage to try, fail, and try again with even more determination. As cliche as it might sound, each setback is a lesson in disguise, guiding us toward greater understanding and creativity.

Architecture in itself is an iterative-heavy field, and it’s in the moments of stumbling that we often find our greatest inspiration. By approaching challenges with resilience and a willingness to learn, we can turn setbacks into springboards for innovation and inspiration.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Beginning a career in architecture was not necessarily easy but it was most definitely fulfilling. It takes a lot of self discipline, a genuine interest in exploring design through various lenses, and the ability to distill intricate concepts into captivating spatial experiences.

Embracing the challenges in architecture is the key to overcoming them. Every obstacle is a chance to refine and elevate your craft. It’s about seeing setbacks not as hindrances, but as invaluable opportunities to stretch your imagination, hone your skills, and ultimately, create spaces that resonate with both beauty and purpose.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My version of the best day in San Diego will always include a solid beach, california burrito and good company; all of which are incredibly easy to find here.

I’ve found that the beauty of San Diego not only lies in the variety of activities available within the City but also the accessibility of nearby adventures you can pair with it. From hitting the slopes in Big Bear and then diving into the ocean on the same day, to teeing off at Torrey Pines before grabbing tacos across the border in Tijuana, the possibilities are endless.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife Jennifer Esteban for supporting this crazy career
