We had the good fortune of connecting with Patsee Ober and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Patsee, where are you from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
My love for the ocean began at a young age, growing up on an island in Southern California, where I spent most of my free time at the beach, sailing, swimming and exploring. My dad was an amateur photographer and took photos all over the world as part of his travels as a pilot in the Marine Corp. My mom would like to tell others that I had salt water running through my veins! Both parents were instrumental and supportive of my beach life, yachting and photography. As I became more involved with the ocean, I realized that photography was an excellent way to share my ocean adventures with others and to promote marine conservation.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others in my field is my unique perspective and unwavering commitment to both artistry and conservation. What I am most proud of and excited about is the ability to capture the beauty of the underwater world while simultaneously advocating for its protection and preservation. My technique involves free diving and open water swimming which allows me to get up close and personal with the creatures I photograph. This technique enables me to capture the ocean’s movement and light resulting in awe-inspiring images. Before each shoot, I study the moon phase and tides, currents surf report, sun position at low tide, clarity of the water and wind. I prep according to nature before I shoot which keeps me from sitting at a computer post shoot, endlessly manipulating my images.
Getting to where I am today professionally was far from easy. It required countless hours of practice, dedication, and perseverance. There were challenges along the way, from technical hurdles in mastering underwater photography to the daunting task of building a brand and business from scratch. However, I overcame these challenges by staying true to my passion, seeking guidance from mentors and peers in the industry, and continuously pushing myself to improve.
Along this journey, I’ve learned invaluable lessons. I’ve learned the importance of patience, adaptability, and resilience in the face of adversity. I’ve learned that success is not measured solely by recognition or financial gain but by the impact we have on the world around us.
What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that Ober Reef Photography is more than just a name—it’s a commitment to using art as a tool for change. Through my work, I hope to inspire others to appreciate the beauty of our oceans and to take action to protect them for future generations. My story is one of passion, perseverance, and purpose, and I am excited to continue sharing it with the world.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Our journey begins with a refreshing morning swim at various stunning locations like Crescent Bay, Shaws Cove, or the iconic Main Beach, where the azure waves beckon us to swim amidst the gentle waves, kelp forests and life giving reefs. After working up an appetite, we’ll hop aboard Laguna’s free trolley destined for a scrumptious breakfast at Zinc, fueling up for the day’s adventures. Next, it’s a short walk to the iconic Sawdust Festival, where creativity knows no bounds. Here, amidst a bustling hive of artistic expression, my studio of underwater photography awaits, ready to welcome visitors from far and wide. As my pal peruses the dynamic array of artworks, the festival comes alive with artisanal crafts, live music, good vibrations and endless opportunities for inspiration. Lunch together at Kitchen in the Canyon and we are good to go for the afternoon at the Sawdust.
As the sun begins it’s descent we will embark on a culinary journey along the oceanfront, where a plethora of eateries awaits. We will indulge in fresh seafood and mouthwatering delicacies as we watch the sky ablaze with hues of pink and orange, casting a magical glow over Catalina Island. A walk along the beach takes us home to rest up for the next day!
Each day of our adventure promises new discoveries and unforgettable experiences, whether it’s exploring hidden coves, discovering local treasures at the festival, or simply savoring the joy of being in each other’s company. With every sunset toast, we’ll cherish the memories created during this epic week-long escapade in Laguna Beach, a true art-filled haven for ocean lovers and adventure seekers alike.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In my journey as an underwater photographer and ocean advocate, my supporters have played a crucial role in shaping my path. Firstly, the unwavering encouragement of my parents fueled my passion for ocean activities and provided me with the confidence to explore creatively in and on the water. Additionally, the inspiration I found within the Laguna Beach Bluebelt Coalition propelled me into the world of underwater photography and marine conservation. Participating in their Laguna Beach Marine Protected Area (MPA) photography contest as an amateur photographer was a pivotal moment. Winning with an underwater image not only validated my skills but also served as the catalyst for me to make the bold decision to leave behind my stifling employment and fully immerse myself in my love for the ocean through photography. These supporters, both familial and within the conservation community, have been instrumental in shaping my identity as Ober Reef Photography and driving my dedication to ocean advocacy.
