We had the good fortune of connecting with Pankaj Raval and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Pankaj, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I graduated law school at the bottom of the Legal market and perhaps one of the worst times to graduate as a lawyer in history. I didn’t have a lot of job prospects but I did start at a firm in Tucson Arizona practicing employment litigation and security litigation amongst a variety of other matters. However I quickly realize that this really wasn’t the type of law I wanted to practice and not the place I wanted to be so I decided to take the California bar and was fortunate to pass it on my first try. That allowed me to move to California where I had worked during law school at MTV. I had always had an interest in business and entrepreneurship and trying to find jobs at firms was not easy so after working for a few different lawyers and entertainment law and even bankruptcy for a couple years in Los Angeles I decided it was time to start a firm on my own. I was probably naïve and a little bit overconfident but I figured that I could read the same books that a lot of these other lawyers that were not that far ahead of me reading and create something that I was really proud of and also leverage all the new technologies that were coming out of the time to make the firm more streamlined and efficient for clients. And after 15 years I feel like I’ve been able to accomplish that in some small way. Today we’ve helped over 3000 clients and generated millions in revenue. I am really blessed that I had the support of my parents early on when I needed to lean on them to pay my rent in the first year of starting my business but I consider this my own personal MBA instead of going to get one and pay $60,000 a year at a university I decided I’d invest myself and try to learn on the job. And that is exactly what I did. I enjoyed networking and getting out there so as I met more people out and about in LA I eventually told him yes I can help him with formation and TradeMark and a variety of other areas that I was interested in and had some experience with in the past and was slowly able to build a business around helping other business owners and entrepreneurs. It’s been extremely rewarding and I’ve also had the opportunity to learn a ton along the way. I feel that I’ve been able to provide a unique perspective to a lot of my clients because not only in my advising them on their business I also understand what the challenges are and growing a business

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Carbon Law Group is a technology-forward, human-centered law firm that tries to leverage the efficiencies of technology to provide the most optimal client experience. We focus on providing white glove experiences to our clients. We truly care about each and everyone of our clients and their success. We will always go in above and beyond to make sure that our clients receive the best service. We truly do consider ourselves partners in our client success and want to find new novel ways to always be the best service provider possible.

We’ve grown organically from nothing to helping several thousand clients. This is all through determination and innovation. I realize that you could be the best lawyer in the world but if people don’t know about you then you will limit who you can really help. It’s through that belief and understanding that I have found new novel ways to market and get our name out there so we can help as many people as possible.

Service has always been has always been a core component to our business. I always wanna know how we can serve better and I’m confident that if we are providing a valuable service that people can use and benefit from their business will never have to worry about our business.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love Los Angeles and all the culinary feast it has to offer. I have been fortunate to go to some of the best restaurants in the city and also found some of the best off the beaten path places that I have come to love. I have so many that I could share but a few are:

Fancy:
– Providence
– Bestia
– Dama
– Republiqe

Not so fancy:
– La Cevicheria
– Shin Sen Gumi
– Sushi Enya
– Sugar Fish
– Appolonias
– Genwa
– Honor Bar (Chicken Sandwich is the best)

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate this to the coaches and mentors who provided insight and guidance to me early on in my career. I’d also like to think all of those people who said no to me and who denied me opportunities that I thought I wanted but realized in hindsight they were not the right opportunities for me. I’m glad I was rejected from all those big firm jobs because it forced me to be innovative and create a career and company that was truly my own.
