Meet OnlyChrisAng | Rapper/Singer & Housekeeper

We had the good fortune of connecting with OnlyChrisAng and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi OnlyChrisAng, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve always been drawn to the arts growing up. Grew up loving to read which fed into my love of wanting pursue filmmaking because I wanted others to see the images from words on the page, just expanding the imagination. In college I got into theater and fell into acting as a way to breakaway from myself but to also channel a lot of what I was going through at the time and it was a fun experience that slowly led me to delve into poetry where I would be able to showcase those stories and parts of myself I needed to get out. All this to say that this winding journey ultimately led to what I’m actively pursuing now and that’s as a singer/songwriter. Singing was never a thought in my mind but there came a day when I was just overwhelmed with emotion that I didn’t know what to do with because I just wanted to people to really listen and feel what I had gone through so I just kept writing to a beat which became the first song I ever wrote, “I Don’t Want To Be Touched”. The impact alone that had on me, being able to finally share something that I kept to myself and hurt from for so long was so freeing and the effect it had on the people who listened and came out to support or share their own journeys was so healing and moving that I just realized that this was what I was meant to do. Share my stories and help others knowing they are not alone in their struggles.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others is that I’m just out there to be myself. I’m using the stage and my music to be open and vulnerable, telling stories between songs just trying to connect with whoever is listening. You never know who a person truly is looking on the outside and it’s not easy for people to be open about themselves in general. I’ve gone through so much in life already to where I’m comfortable knowing who I am and proud of how far I’ve come and though it wasn’t easy, I just want others to see that it’s okay to be vulnerable and open. The world can be mean but I hope that the environment i’m able to create around any show I’m part of can be a safe space to just let walls down. Getting to where I am now wasn’t easy, I’ve had no training in singing or songwriting, I don’t even know music lingo or notes. I’ve found to just learn it as I go and just focus on the things that I can control. I get better each time I perform, so I go to open mics all the time to progress and share my music as often as I can. It can be discouraging feeling like I’m not moving as fast I’d like to, trying to make this a career, but I believe everything happens for a reason and the time I’m taking to make it happen for myself will be worth it. Persistence is key. Just gotta keep moving forward.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d rent bikes around downtown and cruise around gaslamp to around the convention center checking out both parks, stop by Seaport Village then head to the Waterfront and catch the ferry to Coronado Island and bike round there. After returning, get some tacos at Tacos El Gordo down south, check out Third Avenue while there then back north to Mt. Soledad for the amazing view before chilling out at Belmont Park. End the day with some karaoke from Emo Talent Collective and Kbbq in Clairemont.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to my family and friends who have supported me on this path that I’m pursuing that isn’t easy. Lex who helped me record my first few songs in his room to Ian Andrew who helps produce my tracks now. My ETC. Karaoke family who lets me preview tracks everytime I write new song. To the open mics at Snoice hosted by Sherwin that started this journey. Mom, Dad, Nanay, Jacks and Buboy, I love you and thank you… seeing me grow and supporting me to continue doing this when it means being away from home.
