We had the good fortune of connecting with Olivia Ryt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Olivia, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
For me, risk is when there is an opportunity and the outcome is unknown. I see risks as an essential aspect of making decisions. Parts of my life where risk-taking made an enormous impact, were deciding if I wanted to continue with my education, which brings the follow-up question of where, but an even equivalent risk was starting my YouTube channel, three years ago. The major reason for this is that any individual posting their first video on YouTube could tell you that they do not know what the future holds for their channel. Especially for me, when I have to go to school, work, and provide weekly content for my channel, my greatest risk was to fulfill my daily obligations. Taking the risk to start my channel is a decision I am glad that I made back in March 2020, because I not only learned how to improve my editing, recording, and vocal skills, but I got to understand myself to a deeper level. An example is when there were moments I had to analyze what was important to me and what I wanted to keep in my life. Life is a jar of risks, just waiting on you to take one and run with it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am extremely proud that through my videos, individuals expressed that they feel comfortable, understand that they belong, and know that they are always welcome at my channel. I got to where I am today through the thought process of taking it one step at a time. The process seems easy from a bird’s eye view, but intimidating while looking at 5% of it. Since I started as a teenager, YouTube did add some stress to my life. One way I overcome the stress, to this day, is by reminding myself to only focus on today and what I could do now. I noticed that the stress is mainly because I am thinking about the future. When I take the time to step back and pay attention to the present, I feel more relaxed.
Nothing is easy in life. It depends on if you really want something or not. This is how I approach everything in my life, especially my YouTube channel. There are times when it gets too much. I have learned that when these moments happen, I need to take a break and remind myself why I am doing it in the first place: to help others.
Some lessons I have learned through my journey as a YouTuber is that not everything is in my control and I do not have to do everything. As well as learning and understanding others’ trial and error because it could assist me in my success.
One thing I want the world to know about me is that when I set my mind to something, I will complete that thing to the best of my abilities. I will learn as much as I am capable of in order to give it my all.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When my friends are visiting from out of town, we will definitely start our day at the forest preserve near my house to catch up on everything while enjoying the fresh air as a squirrel runs across the path. After we work up an appetite, I will drive them down to Bellalukes, which is my favorite local restaurant. I will most likely have a chill dog while my friends try a Chicago dog for the first time. Once we have regained our energy, we will travel to one of my favorite malls in my area. We will explore the stores for a bit before making a pit spot at the bowling alley I had my high school tournaments. After a game or three, we will finish the day watching a Disney movie in my basement as we cuddle with my dog who’s attempting to eat our snacks.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am grateful to my immediate family for being there for all of my milestones and for aiding me to always give my 100%. I would like to give a special thanks to my co-author and lovely mom, Bozena Ryt. I appreciate everything my mom does for me and I love that I got to witness my mom grow into a more intelligent, full-of-life, confident individual during my childhood. Even with the challenges that my mom faced, she still desires to give my brother and me the best life possible by ensuring we are doing what we love.
