We had the good fortune of connecting with Nico Ng and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nico, what principle do you value most?
One rule I always follow when creating projects for clients or creating content for my community is to always give value. People value things differently so before starting a project, I always try to understand the goals of the client, customer, or audience first, so that I can deliver what they need. Most of the time, the value you give will be reciprocated to you through their trust and brand loyalty which is one thing that keeps the business going.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My name is Nico Ng. I’m a lettering artist and designer from Manila, Philippines. I create lettering tools to help lettering artists and enthusiasts create better lettering artworks easily. As someone who does lettering, I know the difficulties of sketching layouts, which are crucial to achieving beautiful lettering compositions. That is why I engineered my tools, the Composition Ruler and Letter Ruler, which make the process easier for everyone, so that you no longer have to worry about ending up with wonky, unbalanced layouts, and you can just enjoy the creation process.
Throughout my years of being in this business, one thing that I learned is that you don’t wait for opportunities to come to you, you have to be proactive and make opportunities come to you.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It depends on how they want to spend their time here and where they are from. I would probably drive them around the city to show them what everyday life here is like. I would also take them to my favorite restaurants, Jolibee will definitely be on the list if they haven’t tried try their fried chicken yet. And if they would like to meet other local creatives, I would organize a little art session at a cozy local cafe. And maybe end the day at a local craft brewery.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t be where I am without the love and support of my parents. They were patient with me when I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, and they gave me the freedom to find my passion to pursue anything I want. Completely shifting direction from graduating with an engineering degree to pursue a creative path with zero experience was a scary leap, but I was blessed to have the support of my family.
I would also like to give a shout out to my small group of creative business friends, Jeremy Jonathan (@jerome_jonathan), Joyce Lee (@artsynibs), and Nathaniel Ong (@nathanielong) for always being available to support each other and answer each others’ questions about our creative businesses.
