We had the good fortune of connecting with Nick Defalco and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nick, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
This is an interesting question for sure. And it’s not a simple one to answer either. At least for me, this is an idea that I struggle with every week. It ebbs and flows and is not something I would ever answer on a whim. I’m not going to lie, there are days, weeks even that I want to give up. I do not want to devote the time or the money or the attention that is required to run a weekly podcast. And Realistically I barely give it the attention it really deserves. I have a full-time job, sometimes two, I have hobbies and friends, and things I want to do and have to do to keep my life afloat. To run a podcast, I have to keep up with the news, and movies and shows, and games, and there just isn’t enough time in a week to do it all. Plus, all the promotional work, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, the list goes on, but in the end its worth it. When you see those likes, those streaming numbers, those subscribers. Right now, I do it for fun, it’s my outlet to talk about my loves, my passions, what I enjoy the most. So, when I have the hankering to just give it up, I think about how this is my podium, push through those desires to give up, and keep on going. Because growth and prosperity only come if you keep on going.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When I stared this podcast, and I’ve talked about it before, I wanted to be edgy, provocative the Joe Rogan or Howard Sterns of Nerd Podcasting. I wanted to stand out and express my true feelings and thoughts on topics without feeling the pressure to conform to what normal nerd culture was used to. I didn’t want to sanitize my thoughts, that doesn’t mean being offensive or disrespectful. I meant sharing in the truest way, and without sugarcoating or using flowery language. Yes, I use expletives, and I’m direct and upfront. I don’t want to be another voice in the crowd. Nerd culture tends to have a lot of groupthinks, and I wanted to be an individual, even if it meant being the only person with that thought, or even agreeing with the majority. My main goal was to focus on what I felt would be different from everyone else. It hasn’t been the easiest journey, but my growth on all platforms proves that the work I’m doing is paying off. I went from a few listeners every month, to 1000’s of downloads a month. Now, that doesn’t mean I’ve had my big break, far from it, but it shows that not everything happens right away. I am humble, and I don’t have the time to dedicate that could make me a household name, at least not yet. Yet that’s what drives me, knowing that fame can come at any time, but it could also disappear at any time too.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The best part about living in San Diego County, is that year-round we have some of the best weather on the planet. And we live in an area that allows us to visit the beach and the mountains in one day. But that’s what’s on the bumper sticker, its more nuanced and more complicated than that. So, what would I do in a week? At least one day would be spent at the beaches, probably Carlsbad or Encinitas, that’s where I go every weekend. And lunch would be at Craft Coast in Oceanside, some of the best beer and Tacos on the coast and owned by a friend. Another day would be spent going to the different breweries around Vista, where I live, like Belching Beaver, Booze Bros, and Pure Project. Another Day would probably be spent at the zoo or Safari Park, you can’t visit and not go, a) great walking around activity and b) inexpensive c) getting to see wild animals in an environment no other zoo can match. If its baseball season, got to spend an afternoon/day at Petco and see the padres play, and then finish the day in the Gaslamp, great food, great bars, great people. A personal favorite is the shout house. Another Day would be back downtown in Little Italy, stop at Mona Lisa for a sandwich, hit up the midway, and then dinner at Nonna. Now to wind down, probably head down to Coronado to spend the day again at the beach and walking around and enjoying the unbeatable vibes, and I’m a big fan of the Henry. Sprinkle in some time in La Jolla or a day trip to Julian, but again depends on the weather, and going with the flow.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
All the credit needs to be given to my friends. I spent a lot of years, talking about doing a podcast or a blog or anything in-between, and it was mostly hot air. So, I said to myself one day, just do it, literally just get off the couch, stop saying and start doing. Yeah, it sounds cliche, but in the end I did it to a) get them off my back, and b) to say to myself “what’s actually stopping you”.
