We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicholas Montes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicholas, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
We are inspired by the many artists we see taking the creative process into their own hands. Tennis, The Marias, and Steve Lacy are all influences of ours who have shown us that self-produced music can be just as beautiful and inspiring as music created in a professional studio or under a major label. We started self-producing our music on our second EP, “It Doesn’t Last” (2019) under the name “Bedroom Baby Records”. We recorded this project in various rooms in our guitarist, Louie Espitia’s family home in Victorville, California.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We’re proud of the progress we’ve made as songwriters and producers in Your Westies. If we could go back and show our younger selves the music we’re making today, I think we’d be absolutely blown away. At the end of the day, we’ve always strived to create music that we enjoy and would want to listen to ourselves. We’re grateful for the bond and memories we’ve made together as a band. The idea that this group would still be making music and chasing our dream 10 years after I first picked up a guitar is beautiful. I know that no matter the level of success we reach as artists, we will look back fondly at these records that act as a time capsule of our youth. Because of our decision to record independently, the music that we’ve created will last forever.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We’d like to recognize and shoutout our dear friend Steven Todd, who we think of as our honorary 5th member of the band. Steven is a graphic designer, photographer, and film maker who creates art that we are constantly amazed by. Steven goes above and beyond to support us as artists. He’s part of our planning meetings as a band, records footage of our live shows, designs our show posters, artwork, press kits and so much more. He keeps it real, drives our passion and progress, and always makes sure we’ve got our eyes on the prize. We’re so appreciative to have a friend like him on our team.
