We had the good fortune of connecting with Natasha Ramras and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Natasha, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
The beauty of the play of light on surfaces inspires me. The humbling grandeur of nature in all its permutations makes me want to capture it and hold on to the feeling of human frailty. The sandy cliffs, the play of light on the water, the transparent turquoise of the Pacific ocean lapping on sandy shores, or angry waves crushing on the rocky shore, the shadows, the glow of objects in setting sun and, of course, the sunsets make me swoon.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am enjoying watching how my art progresses over the years from realistic to concepts and contemporary pieces. My latest craze is larger, abstracted works that have hidden imagery. Some paintings are more obvious than others. I love how human brains tease out and categorize images into order and recognizable objects. I feel that the skill I have honed for many years is supporting my surrender to the creative forces while making paintings. The process is energizing, exhausting, and elevating; all at the same time. My paintings are conversation starters, with each viewer internalizing the shapes and color to see their own imagery.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Any outing has to involve the beach, specifically Torrey Pines State Park and the beauty of the undeveloped cliffs. I like walking to the top of the park and walking down the trial that leads to the beach. I take my friend to Roberto’s for a quick meal afterwards and maybe catch a band at the Kraken in the evening. Over the course of a week, we’d visit Balboa Park, paddle board in Mission Bay, and stroll through the Hotel Del, among other things. I am also a fan of Dim Sum, so we would have to make a trip to Kearny Mesa to dine at Jasmin’s or one of the other options.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The list is quite long, but I will call out Carol Marine — an artist that wrote a book “Daily Painting” that gave my art pursuits structure and let my skills grow and develop. I would also like to call out Betsy Williams, a work mentor, that was very supportive and encouraging over the years and is one of my most beloved collectors as well as my husband. He loves everything I produce, but claims he isn’t biased!
