We had the good fortune of connecting with Nasimeh B.E. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nasimeh, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Truly – I had no choice. Some of us are just born as such: meant to be creatives, meant to be artists. At times, I wished so deeply I wasn’t so! It has not always been an easy path.

But it is my path, and one I would not trade for the world – for it is my own.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have always been an artist, since I could hold a pen. I knew from a young age that I would be pursuing some sort of creative career – although I had no idea how that would look, or how it would unfold.

Well, it unfolded in quite a winding way. I worked on farms, worked for non-profits, worked in education, the food industry. I’ve had a LOT of jobs. But I always kept my creativity at the center, and close to my heart.

I think one of the greatest gifts I gave myself creatively was to find my artistic voice. I wasn’t sure where I fit for a long time: I’m an artist who writes and a writer who illustrates. The two are inextricably linked in my practice. Thankfully, I eventually found an audience online who resonates with what I create. This has been a great gift – and one that keeps on giving, day in and day out.

What I’d love people to know about me – my brand, my story – is that it’s genuine. I create from the heart, and share from the heart. What I make is personal to me – and as such, I care deeply for it!

I’d also love to tell young artists: there is a place for you. This I promise. It may take some finding – but when you find it, you will know.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in New York, which is an endlessly fascinating place. I love taking people who visit to Greenwood Cemetery and Prospect Park, both of which are near me. I love to take people to music shows, and to museums. Of course, we have to eat good food, too – there’s so much in New York!

I often like to take people to places that are a bit underrated, or lesser known. In my neighborhood, there’s a bar called Barbes, which plays amazing world music shows every night. It’s a gem, and one I love to show off. There’s also a store called Leroy’s place – which, yes, my friend runs, but still – which is like 90s Nickelodeon in a store.

And of course, as cliche as it is: Central Park is amazing. It is, and we are lucky to have it!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There an endless number of people who have helped me get where I am. My parents, first of all, who have always been loving and supportive – even when they were baffled. The staff at my college, Guilford College, who nurtured and supported me. All those involved in Camp Grounded – a summer camp for adults that I worked at for years – who helped me become who I am. And of course, my friends, who ground me when little else does.
