We had the good fortune of connecting with Myrna Avitia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Myrna, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I have always known I wanted to pursue a creative career. Since I was little, I immediately fell in love with creating and how I would perceive people enjoying what they do. However, I didn’t find my particular interest for Photography until college and during the pandemic. I grew up feeling frustrated due to me not finding my particular artistic interest. All I knew is that I wanted to work with art and I somehow had to make it work. This process was not fast, I tried pursuing drawing, painting, screen printing, amongst many other art works (which I still enjoy) but nothing felt like it was my “thing”. Adding to the experimentation of a lot of mediums, while picking my ideal college in High School, I was told by family to not go through the art route because I would only become a “starving artist” , until my art professor at the time explained to my family that selling my art is not the only art path one has as a creative, the options are infinite for any career and that meant I could explore my creative career and eventually let Photography find me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art feels like it will always be an exploration and an extension of myself. I am currently a travel, concept and editorial photographer as I am always trying to create and capture my environment. I started solely as an editorial photographer for a personal project in which I was involved creating a collaborating photoshoots with local artists but somehow I was interested in capturing more of the world around me as well, small moments of people’s days and my inner questions for my conceptual work. As an artist, I love creating but I also enjoy the research process behind every photo, it doesn’t matter if it’s an editorial, travel or conceptual work I like researching people’s patterns and behaviors, trend forecasting or the best places to go take photographs to be able to capture them from my own perspective. Because of this, every time I start a new project I get excited over how different it will be from all the others or what adventure it will take me to next. I want the everyone to know how deeply I want the world to be seen and the beauty it carries on its own.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is such as fun question because as I’ve mentioned before I love doing research and finding the best places around San Diego has to be one of my favorite things to do. I always recommend visiting Barrio Logan as there are so many shops, galleries, food spots to check out. Close to there, Grant Hill Park is a small park with a beautiful view of the Coronado Bridge that is really worth stopping by. As for food I love the atmosphere of Fortunate Son Chinese and the drinks from a speakeasy located in Kearney Mesa called Convoy Music Club. For last but not least, one of the coolest things about San Diego is the proximity of many other cities or places around, one should always try to make a stop in Tijuana, México if they have the chance and have someone to take them as a their full tourist guide!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My success has definitely been the outcome of unimaginable amounts of support from those around me. My family, more specifically my mother has been a huge pillar when it comes with my Photography career, she has remained my best friend through every outcome and the best human when it comes to a decision. She has taught me if you want something, you can have it, there’s a reason why we want it in the first place. I also want to thank the creatives around me, my friends and all the creatives that have become friends thanks to my art, Mara Love (@mara.love) , Dakotah Puccio (@cody___p), Jesus Alarcon (@alarcon.beauty) , Claritza Castro (@esti.itza), Keyana Palomera (@kpalomera) and many more. Lastly, I want to acknowledge all the artists and photographers that came before me, I have learned from every creative I’ve crossed paths with and I could not be doing what I do without them.
