Meet Mykel Hicks | Fence & Deck Builder

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mykel Hicks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mykel, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
The single most important decision I made that contributed to my success was deciding to specialize in one market. I was raised in a home building/general construction family where we took on much more than one trade. We were general contractors. I went that direction when I first started out and found that I was not enjoying the high level of sub contractor and material coordinating. Once I let go of my ego I was able to hone in on my true passion and skill. I am a carpenter at heart and very creative. The moment I channeled that skill and passion into only exterior work such as decks and fences I instantly fell in love with my job and took off running. I absolutely love the projects we work on. I am now able to not only master my craft in deck and fence building but I am able to create innovative techniques that set us apart from the competition. We are deck and fence builders. This is what we do. This is all we do.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Hicks Exterior Accents specializes in fencing, decks, balconies, gates, patio covers, siding, and cladding. All of these trades add accents to your home to enhance its natural beauty. We love to customize any project and bring our customers visions to life. Mykel Hicks Owner and Founder of Hicks Exterior Accents is a fourth generation builder from Honolulu Hawaii. Mykel grew up working in construction at an early age at his family’s construction company Hicks Homes. That was where his love for construction blossomed. After finishing college Mykel moved to California in 2015 where he met his wife Emily Hicks. The duo now oversee all business operations at Hicks Exterior Accents. Mykel’s years of experience and vast knowledge provide creative concepts and outstanding work.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We love Orange County. Being from Hawaii we are a beach family. We love Newport Beach because you get the beach atmosphere and great restaurants near by. One of our favorite stops on the way to the beach is Sancho’s Tacos.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Id like to send a special shout out to my wife and business partner, Emily Hicks. Emily has always pushed me to work towards my goals. She supported me the entire way even though she admitted she was terrified when I quit my job. She knew I could do it and I knew I couldn’t do it without her. She is my back bone and the reason for my success.
