We had the good fortune of connecting with Montserrat Lewin Mejia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Montserrat, why did you pursue a creative career?
I decided to become a content creator during quarantine when I realized that I was not satisfied with just studying engineering. Don’t get me wrong, one of my passions is learning about how objects are created and how supply chains work. However, for the longest of times, I had pushed my creative passion to the side. So, what better time to start something new than when we were all locked up at home? I absolutely love creating content with brands, as photography and modeling is an art in itself. It became the challenge I needed at that moment in my life, and it continues to be one as I balance it out with my full time job.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I work at a tech company in their Global Operations team, and I am also a content creator on Instagram. It is very rare to find women in STEM who are also big fans of social media, or at least I have never had the opportunity to meet someone who works in the same two fields as me. I studied Applied Engineering Sciences at Michigan State, graduating in May 2021. Engineering school was probably one of the biggest challenges I have ever faced, not only are the classes hard and very demanding, but engineering is still a very male-dominated field. In most of my projects, I had to work with men who would instantly shut my ideas down and ignore any of my feedback. I believe this frustration led me to look for a new outlet, which ended up being content creation. There is no correct way in starting content creation, you just have to throw yourself out there, and that is exactly what I did. You face a lot of rejection from brands, which becomes really disappointing after time. But probably the most important lesson I learned in both of my fields was to not let anyone bring you down. You will face hard challenges along life but what makes you is the way you respond.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have only been living in the area for 3 months, so I have slowly been going to new places in So Cal. I would 100% start with my typical weekend walk to Blue Bowl at UCI, get the biggest bowl and add all the toppings. Then, we would spend the day at Laguna Beach, my favorite beach is Table Rock. After a long day of swimming, walking on the beach, and taking a million photos, we would head back to Hiro Nori for dinner.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my family and my boyfriend who has always been so supportive. I received nothing but their 100% when I got a job in California which was the biggest step I have ever taken. Also, I constantly annoy them by going to different locations so that they can take pictures of me for me to post. I just hope they know they mean the world to me.
