We had the good fortune of connecting with Moises Yamid Rodriguez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Moises Yamid, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I decided to pursue my artistic side since I was in high school, I learned to play the guitar and music became something essential in my life, I think that drove me into the arts, I became more sensitive to them, then I decided to study architecture; at first I wanted to be a civil engineer, but tried to take a chance and change my mind at the last second, and don’t regret my decision. I’ve been practicing photography as well as a second art language, for me, architecture and architectural photography are one.
I have a degree in architecture and I have a full time job designing, that led me to start taking photography. I learned how to use a professional camera as a hobby and then it became a career.
I have also taken several courses in architectural photography and photo editing. which has helped me gain knowledge for my professional development.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Since I began my career as an architect, I have been fascinated by the way in which projects were represented, in the form of plans and 3D rendered images, but something caught my attention with photography, the way they capture a finished building at the end of a project it was something instantaneous that captivated me, it was then that I decided to dedicate myself to being an architectural photographer, I like to show buildings in a way of functionality and in an artistic way without leaving aside the technical part of the construction, I have learned to show buildings both functionally as well as aesthetically, from complete exterior perspectives of the building and in context with its surroundings, to more specific interior and exterior details.
Since I was in university I have really liked the brutalist and modernist architectural movement. I have based my photographic style and framing like these movements have. What I try to show with my photographic style like I said before is the functionality of the space, how the areas unfold and how they interact with each other, and thus show as much of the project as possible. Technically speaking, I have always been a fan of ultra-wide angle photography and passionate about architectural functionalism.
This is my second year as an architectural photographer, but I started practicing it more than 6 years ago, I had not had time to develop it professionally, so I decided to start it because I believe I have the necessary technical knowledge of photography and architecture. It has not been easy, since it is a bit complicated to find clients who require your services, and who like your work, but you should not be discouraged if that happens, on the contrary you should continue practicing and generating content by photographing for pure passion and love of art.
As an architect, I like to represent my projects as detailed as possible, I have always liked to have attention to detail, graphically explain what I think and the ideas I have, this has contributed to the way I develop professionally and in my daily life, I always like to give a little extra in everything, it’s like a little life motto.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would start with a walk through Tijuana, the city has many new and trendy places, but nothing beats the classics, I would take my friends for some basket tacos from the La Especial restaurant, for me they are some of the best, maybe they are not the most popular, but they have a special place in my heart, secondly I would take them for a beer to Cerveceria Insurgente, for me best beer in town! and at the end some churros from Cuarto Anhelo, I am a total fan of churros.
I would also visit San Diego, I would go to Balboa Park to visit the museums, it is a very cultural experience, and the park offers many things to do enough for the whole day, the Japanese Garden is one of my favorites. I would eat In-N-Out burgers, they are a must! Also walk through Waterfront Park, and enjoy the architecture of the city.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to thank my wife Silvia, she has always been by my side since the beginning of my professional career, and has shared this journey with me for more than a decade, I will always be grateful to her for what she has done for me and for encouraging me to always give my best and continue learning something new every day.
I also want to thank my parents and my sister for always supporting me in the goals I set for myself, I always be grateful to my family for their support.
