Meet Michael Sarmiento | Exercise Physiologist and surf and skateboard designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Sarmiento and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
I love the quote from “Bubble Boy” when Slim encourages the bubble boy to take risk for what he wants he said, “You didn’t break out of that bubble room to play it safe!” So, when I feel scared about something in life especially when surfing bigger surf or tough skateparks I think back on that quote.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I love simplistic and colorful design, and I think that shows in my board design. I’m really excited to release my new surfboard designs. As a surfer we want to rip and go fast, and I want a board that makes it as easy as possible. My designs promote ease of surfing but still have that rip and roll you want from a high-performance board. So, I can’t wait for surfers to try them and see how easy and fun it can be. Nothing about this process has been easy learning all the design programs, registration for taxes, seller permits, LLC and trademark it’s a long process. I want people to think of EVL as a brand that supports a healthy lifestyle, loves skating and surfing, hosts fun events and gives back to the community.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Dood! San Diego has it all. Of course, we have to get a surf at black’s beach or mission beach. Got to skate Linda Vista skatepark. Going sailing or paddling on Mission Bay is fun on warm day. After doing all of our activities getting a good meal at Blue Ocean in La Jolla or Miguels Mexican in Old Town. The rooftop cinema club is fun and relaxing if the swell is down, or you are beat from nonstop surf and skate for days.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe my late cousin Jody Smith credit for the idea for a surf company. My mother and father for supporting me and believing in the idea. My aunt Kat Kat for housing support allowing me to live in San Diego (the legend of the rent is hardcore).
