We had the good fortune of connecting with Meka Lolita and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meka, how do you think about risk?
I am a BIG risk taker. I have taken some huge risk in my life and I can’t say that I regret any of them. Im a first generation college student and graduate and for me, that was the first huge risk I ever took. Moving away to a new city by myself, not knowing a soul at the age of 17 was the start of my risk taking journey. I hold so much pride in being the first to bring a degree home to my family. And when I succeeded at that risk, that helped me build confidence in myself to be able to take even more risk. Like packing up my car and driving across country to move to LA in the middle of a pandemic. Or like quitting my job in 2022 during the rise of inflation with no savings to fully pursue my DJ career. Now, I do not recommend ALL risk. I am a little insane. lol. But we have a saying back home in Louisiana and we say, “I just jumped off the porch”. And with God, I always seem to land on my feet.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Im just a girl from Shreveport, LA (Motown to be exact), who still can’t believe that I am living in Los Angeles. Who is DJing, building a name and brand for myself, actually gigging, and connecting with so many beautiful and amazing people. If you would have told younger me, a person dealing with depression and daily panic attacks, that I would be in doing what I’m doing today, I’d simply no believe myself. I have gotten to were I’ve gotten professionally, through healing. Everything is spiritual. Everything. And it took years of me going to therapy, journaling, reading, studying, my yoga practice, my increasing relationship with God, that truly got me out of my darkest days. I had to learn to love and believe in myself. So I could make decisions in life, and in business, based off of those beliefs. The biggest challenge I have overcome is myself. We can be our own worse enemy. We can be our biggest block. Our outer reality is a reflection of our inner reality. So if you don’t like something about it, use the God within you to change it.
I want the world to know that my brand and my story is truly authentic to who I am as a person. I truly do not know how to be anybody else but me. And I want to encourage others to do the same. Be you. You’re a physical manifestation of God. Do you know how powerful that is? Do you know the weight that that holds? I want people to feel and know that. And I want to use my story as an inspiration to do so. A testimony.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Omg, this is hard! Lol. So if my sister-friend Victoria was coming to visit. I would have to make sure she goes to events like Black Market Flea and/or Black On The Block. We’d have to hit up an Everyday People. We have to do dinner at Catch, because Catch is so LA! lol Let’s see, Im spinning a lot at The Nile Bar in Inglewood so she’d have to come see me spin and she gotta order the shrimp tacos and the infamous salmon bites. We’d have to go to YFLNM (Your Favorite Late Night Mix) on Friday, shouts out to Oliver Lastname and Court Moves. Moonflower Mondays at The Falls Lounge. Lets just say Victoria would have to make sure she packs her dancing shoes! LOL!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Man, so many people have invested in me throughout my life. But on my DJ journey in particular, I’d have to give the biggest thanks to my DJ mentor Bang Jackson. He really has poured into me in a major way and helped me get my foot into the industry. While also just being super professional, letting me know who I should or shouldn’t work with. He’s encouraged me to grow and just learn the DJ culture and business. As a woman and as a DJ, it’s important to work with men who you feel safe and comfortable with. And I’m just extremely grateful to have a mentor like him in my corner. I’ve had other people try to come in and “mentor” me but they did not have my best interest at heart. I feel like he does.
