We had the good fortune of connecting with Marsha Ashby and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marsha, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Throughout my life I have always been wary of taking risk and have taken the safe, secure path. After all, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, right?

All of the things that have happened in the world over the past three years caused me to take an honest look at my life. I realized that by taking the safe path, I was not being true to myself, but more importantly, I was cheating others out of receiving the gifts I have to share. That realization led me to make a decision that is bringing me great rewards.

I had experienced the benefits of Reiki, a practice involving energy work intended to help you achieve relaxation and bring your body to a balanced place. I became certified to practice but had not made any clear decision of how to move forward. Then one day something happened that I couldn’t look away from and it catapulted me to take a leap of faith and create Star Room Reiki.

I have already seen shifts in my life. New opportunities are coming my way. I am building new relationships that are more in line with what I believe and am creating a meaningful and fulfilling life. While some would say it was a risky move, looking back I can see that it was the only way.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Star Room Reiki is a wellness service in San Diego.

A few years ago, I was feeling a great loss of direction and sense of purpose in my life, so I decided to give Reiki a try. Reiki works by shifting energy in the body, creating balance and a space of being better positioned to naturally heal the body, mind and spirit. It is not a practice to be used in place of medical treatment, rather it is complementary.

After about a year of Reiki sessions, I experienced life changing personal growth and healing, and started looking at things from a new perspective. I knew I wanted to share this experience with others. Having previously trained as a massage therapist, it was a simple move to become certified to practice Reiki.

I started Star Room Reiki based on a vision and desire to help others. The biggest challenge, aside from still being in a pandemic, was that many people were unaware of the practice or how it works. So much of my time over the past few months has been to educate others.

I do believe that coming out of these past recent years, many people have started to rethink aspects of their lives due to illness, the deaths of family members and friends, and job shifts and losses. This is the perfect time to accept the type of subtle changes that can come about from the Reiki experience, and I am committed to supporting as many as I can in their quest to love themselves and their lives.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

First and foremost, we would start with a relaxing massage. Then, if I was able to book in advance, we would take a short road trip to Landers, California for a sound healing at The Sound Bath at Integratron. You definitely need advance planning for this but it is an absolutely unforgettable experience. Otherwise, we can join in a sound healing experience here at either Saffron & Sage or Zen Soul Balance.

For a daytime outing, Balboa Park has a wealth of things to enjoy but my favorites are the Rose Garden and Spanish Village Art Center. Nearby we could take in the European vibe over coffee at Café Bassam, or maybe have dinner at Charles & Dinorah at the Pearl Hotel in Point Loma.

It’s always fun to visit the neighborhoods – North Park, South Park, Barrio Logan and Little Italy – to get the flavor of the city and discover the uniqueness of each one, stopping in at whatever quaint shop catches our attention. Finally, we would find the perfect spot to enjoy the San Diego sunset, which is my favorite time of day.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother, Thelma Loretta Ashby, is my motivation and inspiration. Although she died several years ago, in life she always encouraged me to be true to myself and she inspired me through her own spiritual and healthy lifestyle.
