We had the good fortune of connecting with Mark Reyes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mark, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
Puff Provisions will continue because at the start and end of it all, it’s a fun way of expressing our support for the Cannabis space. As long as we’re of sound mind and body, this project will continue.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been in the web space for 15 years and counting, primarily as a web developer. I got into this space after some soul searching during the Great Recession of 2008. I was essentially down to my last few dollars in that era of time. Jobs were sparse and the housing market crashed hard.
It wasn’t easy as everyone around me was financially strapped. On that note alone, it wasn’t easy. I had to sacrifice a lot to simply get “here” whatever that means in context to today. Through a lot of research and tough conversations, my step-dad co-signed a student loan with me in those turbulent markets. You see being a young 20ish-year-old with little credit history simply didn’t make for a good borrower.
I worked full-time and studied full-time at night for the better part of 3+ years straight. The lessons I learned along the way was that nothing is free, and if you want something bad enough, you’ll have to embrace the fact that there will always be a cost or sacrifice to make.
My story now is essentially this…I’m an elder millennial dad, husband and full-time desktop athlete striving to figure out how recreational Cannabis plugs into our modern day world. PuffProvisions.com is my outlet in telling that story.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For my friends with kids visiting: Balboa Park in full alongside the San Diego Zoo. My preferred beach stretch runs from Del Mar to Oceanside. Fiesta Island and Mission Bay are awesome as well for beach activity. I’ll also have a preference to encouraging some good Mexican food by way of Lolita’s (any location).
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
In terms of resources there are two in particular. Soft Skills: The Software Developer’s Life Manual by John Sonmez and Crushing It by Gary Vaynerchuk. In terms of people, my wife has been my number one supporter of all my career pivots and passion projects.
