We had the good fortune of connecting with Marina Shkolnik and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marina, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I always saw art as a way for all people to understand each other regardless of country or language, and communicate when the art of communication is been lost.

Art reaches beyond the surface and I live to photograph the roots underneath.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It is a challenge transforming my creativity into a career. Today, it seems like everyone has a camera and is a photographer. What makes me different is that I am an artist, I have a Bachelor of Fine Art, I aspire to see and show truth through my photography. I am easy to work with and most people enjoy our sessions. Headshots and creative portraits are my favorite as it gives me the chance to connect with my subject and give them the image they see in themselves.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am raising my children in Poway. I am used to the quiet of the country. I would take my visitor to Bernardo Winery, the Poway Farmers Market, enjoy Barrel Riot Barrel Aged Wines and visit with friends in the neighborhood.

Take a walk at Blue Sky Reserve, or hike Iron Mountain, or potato chip rock.

I also love Carlsbad state beach campground for camping in the summers.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I had amazing art professors at SUNY Purchase whose raw talent and leadership inspired me. I also had an amazing art teacher at The Beacon High School in NYC, Miss Molloy, who exposed me to some really amazing artists during my high school years. She believed in me and showed me the path to my creative liberation.
