We had the good fortune of connecting with Maíra Dias Botelho de Magalhaes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maíra, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
People think that preparing for your birth is enough. It’s not. Sure, birth is a rite of passage and a life changing event, but preparing for the full experience, which includes most importantly the postpartum time IS what needs to be happening during pregnancy.

What should our readers know about your business?
I work from a true holistic perspective for the birth continuum, which includes pregnancy, the process of labor & birth and the postpartum time. Most midwives in my area only offer a very basic postpartum follow-up with their clients. For me, true care is about continuity of care, which means that I work with my clients during their pregnancies, their birth process (if they’re choosing me) and more importantly throughout their postpartum experience. My work is rooted in ancestral traditional healing practices for the postpartum time.

I consider my practice quite successful although I’ve been working like this not for long and despite the fact that the lack of awareness, understanding and knowledge of why this work is crucial for women and their health in the long run.

Most women who find me have a certain level of awareness around the importance of healing in the postpartum time, but most people in our society nowadays are clueless about the risks, dangers and consequences of not taking care of yourself during this very vulnerable yet crucial period of your life both as a woman and a new mother.

I want the world to know that the postpartum time can be blissful and nourishing even though it’s a natural depleted and challenging time.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love the beach and going hiking in the near mountains. Visiting some of LA’s museums and outdoor concerts is a favorite of mine too.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate what i’m going to share with you about traditional postpartum care to my teacher Rachelle Garcia Seliga, Midwife and creatrix of INNATE Traditions Postpartum Care.
