Meet Magely Martinez | Makeup and Hair Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Magely Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Magely, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started to learn that creating my own business would allow me to have more liberty and control over projects I work on and and my time. As I started to be more involved in the makeup and media community it’s amazing to see how professionals get to choose projects because of how they can relate to a story or how wedding artists get to work with clients they fit well with or artists that get to choose their own vacation time. Yes, it gets difficult and it feels like I always have something to work on but it gives me a sense of purpose because my makeup business is something I’m still currently building from the ground and I get to see for myself how I can improve it and make it stand out. It’s putting in all the blood (fake of course), sweat, and tears in this that makes me care for it more and lets me realize how much I’m passionate about what I do.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
So I am a makeup and hair artist who does both beauty and special effects. I love having the ability to be diverse- I work with production, photoshoots, weddings, and sometimes fashion. What excites me most is there is always someway to grow and learn- it never stops and the sky is the limit! I can always improve someway and keep moving up in the world, especially since I hope to become a key makeup artist on a film one day. It was definitely not easy to get where I am today. I graduated from college September 2019 lined up with some projects and then the pandemic hit. Even post pandemic it was getting very difficult to get any kind of gigs and I was pretty close to calling it quits but thankfully being surrounded by the right people and being introduced to successful makeup artists is the reason why I was confident in continuing to pursue my original goals and as I was guided through my obstacles. The 2 most important things I have learned so far is to have confidence in myself and the work I do and to never stop practicing. I’m grateful I have the ability to have an artistic career and strive for something I’m passionate about and I hope to make proud those who believe in me by creating impactful stories through makeup.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh! I would definitely hit up a different coffee shop every day especially my favorite, Cafeina Cafe! Convoy is where I would take my best friend for some of the best Asian food, especially Nishiki Ramen, There are still so many areas I have yet to explore in San Diego but I would take them to Coronado Island to get a good view of San Diego, go to beaches like Windansea and Torrey Pines, go through Carlsbad Village, Little Italy, Mission Beach Boardwalk, walk through La Jolla, have a day at the San Diego Zoo and go through Escondido where I started at. Maybe even in that order!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh my goodness there’s literally so many I can thank as to where I got. To keep it long-story-short, my family that let me go the artistic route, my friends who gave me confidence, John Paul the Great Catholic University who pushed me to take the makeup route, Alchemy Beauty Academy who helped me skyrocket my makeup career after I took classes there, and lastly the San Diego makeup and hair community that has helped my in my business emotionally, physically, and artistically.
