We had the good fortune of connecting with Luke Hamel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Luke, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
This question needs to get discussed regarding the Heating and Air Conditioning industry in San Diego. While it directly affects our business, it affects far more customers each year than our company will likely ever serve. Outsiders should know that most HVAC customers are not getting the quality and efficiency they have been led to believe they are receiving. Air Conditioning & Heating salespeople can be deceiving and misleading, and this deception is a large part of why I started Hamel’s Air Conditioning & Heating.

To truly understand this problem, you must first understand how prevalent it is in the heating and air conditioning industry in San Diego. Each day we see between 10 & 15 new clients fairly consistently. In the last year, I can count on one hand how many new clients had HVAC systems and AC repairs that met the quality standards that customers should expect. Sadly, I don’t see this trend ending anytime soon. Most clients believe “reputable” San Diego Air conditioning companies will provide the same HVAC installation quality and air conditioning repairs regardless of price.

Unfortunately, I can tell you from firsthand experience this is not the case 99% of the time. I’ve seen a few of the issues these “reputable” San Diego HVAC companies have produced in just the last few weeks. In one instance, a tech of one of the top 4 heating, air conditioning, and solar companies wired a capacitor wrong. This mistake resulted in the AC condenser fan spinning backwards and the compressor failing 15 mins after they left. We got called in for a second opinion and instantly noticed the fan spinning in the wrong direction. This error caused the unit to overheat and fail prematurely, and now this customer is replacing their system.

In another instance, we got called back to a consumer’s home who went with another well-known company for their installation after multiple issues and a failed permit. After inspection, it was clear the house was not receiving the airflow the system was supposed to produce. As a result, the airflow restriction caused the unit to move about 60% of the airflow the AC equipment was capable of handling. With this lack of airflow, the consumer can expect decreased efficiency, a shorter lifespan as the equipment must work harder, and an increased likelihood of ice overs due to improper airflow.

The above are a few quick examples that show consumers are not getting the quality and efficiency they have been sold on. I left one of these big AC and heating companies many years ago because I was tired of doing things wrong as it was “company policy.” I started Hamel’s to solve this issue directly, and I’m proud that we don’t cut these corners. My only regret is I’ll never be able to help everyone as consumers are often stuck on price. I’ll never be able to compete at the same prices as those who compromise on quality.

I wish more people understood that selecting the right company is more than catchy slogans and following the crowd to the lowest prices.

We got to where we are today by seeing the problem firsthand in these other companies and deciding that there was a better way. It has not been an easy road in large part because there are a lot of big companies that control the narrative through large marketing campaigns. Breaking down these barriers and educating people takes time. But, we’ve overcome these challenges by building a team around each person’s strengths.

We also are very active in our community and sponsor numerous high school athletic teams. Currently, we provide sponsorship for the following high school athletic programs at El Capitan, Ramona, Granite hills, Valhalla, and Santana. We also donate time and assist at the Lakeside rodeo association & the Cactus Park BMX track. In addition, we recently donated a mini-split system to the ticket booth at Cactus park and installed it to help aid this association in its support of our youth. Finally, we are currently working with the 678 Scholarship Pageant to help promote and encourage the current and future queens of the rodeo.

We’re proud to be able to give back to our local communities, and we see no better way to do so than to support the children in each community.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I will keep it local for this one and say you should check out the world-famous Lakeside Rodeo. It’s a fascinating event that spans four days. Being involved with the stadium association has allowed us to see all the smiling faces at these events. I think it would be an excellent experience for anyone visiting the city. There is also the bulls only rodeo in august and it’s a ton of fun as well.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to start by saying thank you to my family. To my loving wife and our six kids, I know it’s not always easy having dad tied up with work so much. Without their support and understanding, it would be nearly impossible to have our heating and air conditioning company to where it is today. To my dad & grandad, thank you for all the knowledge you have passed my direction. Thank you to the friends, of which there are too many to list. Most of all I would like to thank our customers and local communities that believe in us for their support. Lakeside Ca’s support has been tremendous, and we will forever be grateful. I must recognize all the communities throughout San Diego as we receive tons of support throughout the county.
