We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Shaw and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Liz, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As an entrepreneur in the nutrition communications space, my vision behind starting my own business was to help make nutrition science simple for the lay public to understand. Having sat through 6 years of schooling with biochem and organic chem classes, I want to make sure people are getting accurate, science based information on how nutrition affects the body. Given how much misinformation is presented in the media or from the latest celebrity endorsement, I knew I had the education to help make a positive change on how people view health!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I run a nutrition communications business in which I do a variety of things: part of my work involves communicating nutrition science information on behalf of different commodity boards and brands through my social media channels, website or national media outlets, while other parts involve teaching students interested in a future nutrition career path. You’ll often find me speaking at national conferences about nutrition research, appearing on ABC 10 San Diego to share my nutrition tips, or visiting farms over the US to see how our food is grown. Other times I’m seeing clients virtually to help them recognize the power of food and nutrition in their lives! And, when seasons permit, I’m blessed to be able to share my love for simple recipe creation with a national audience through my writing with publishers like Wiley in my latest two cookbooks, Instant Pot Cookbook For Dummies and the Air Fryer Cookbook For Dummies. My path was not easy, but it was 100% worth it. I spent time in clinical dietetics, foodservice and like many, had superiors who didn’t believe in nutrition or thought a female didn’t deserve the same respect as my male counterparts when it came to what I could bring to the table. These experiences helped instill a passion in me to continue to share my love of nutrition with the public at large and inspired me to create my own business. I learned early on, never lose sight of what lights the fire inside of your heart. For me, that was health and communicating the power of it in our everyday lives!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My family loves to be outdoors! Every single time we have visitors we always take them to see the beautiful landscapes San Diego has to offer, be it a hike in Torrey Pines or Iron Mountain! We also love to show them the delicious eats of our county, and somehow always end up at our favorite seafood place, the Encinitas Fish Shop, every single time! We live up in Scripps Ranch and love our home, so we also really enjoy making them feel welcomed by whipping up a BBQ in our backyard! And, of course, I can’t forget my husbands job of picking up some local craft beer to introduce them to as well.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I always had a vision to help share my passions for health and nutrition with the public, but like others who have the entrepreneur spirit felt like I had to spend a certain number of years getting my feet wet in other positions.

While I don’t regret any of my early career opportunities because I truly believed they helped shape the practioner I am today, I wouldn’t have taken the leap full time on my own without the encouragement of my husband, coined Mr.CEO (certified eating officer) on my blog, and my father, a long-time entrepreneur himself. They inspired me to follow my passion and let my education and heart guide me in creating the career of my dreams.
