We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa E and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lisa, what role has risk played in your life or career?

I am an adrenaline seeking adventurist! The biggest, most life changing risk has been as a U.S. Coast Guard search and rescue helicopter pilot. While my 26-year career as a pilot does not necessarily translate to becoming an artist, it certainly adds to how I see the world as an abstract painter. As early as I can remember I have been fascinated with aviation. There have been so many dark and stormy nights when I was called out to respond to mariners in distress. In particular, was when I was stationed in Kodiak, Alaska, there were nights flying in blowing snow, hurricane force winds, and zero visibility where the risks were life threatening. I lived through these challenging flights, and have always found creative solutions in both life and art. Following my rewarding military career I returned to school and received degrees in art and art history. My artistic style is always evolving because I am curious. I find creativity is fluid & fearless. At times while painting I’m on the razors edge between success & disaster. Art is directly connected to my life journey, especially when I was serving as a U.S. Coast Guard pilot.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from most creatives is that I am anything but typical or average. My path into art certainly was not typical. Nothing I have done in my life is what others expected. I march to the beat of my own desires and successfully became an artist after I transitioned from a rewarding 26-year aviation career in the Coast Guard. I have always been creative and found art a perfect fit. Also, as someone who identifies as lesbian, I operated on the margins of expectations and beliefs. I suspect I overcame heteronormative societal challenges because I believe in myself and commitment to excellence. I am grateful that I have been able to marry the love of my life and create a life rich in love and blessings. Amazingly enough, and to my astonishment, my daughter now serves in the Coast Guard working as an Avionics Electrical Technician. These loving connections with my family are my life blood that fuels my creativity and passion. In other words, I see the world in abstract and complex ways and this translates directly into my artwork.

My artistic expression as an abstract painter satisfies my soul. It is my desire to engage the viewer on a deeper, subconscious level. My creative process results in art that has openness, freshness, depth and authenticity. The more the viewer knows, the more they will begin to appreciate my work. My backstory becomes as interesting as my artwork, perhaps even more so. I abstract memories into my artwork. The narrative is left up to the viewer, with each detail in my work a satisfying discovery.

One of my most proudest moments as an artist was during my first year after graduating from art school. I was showing my artwork in Northern California, and sold 25 paintings in one year!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Depending on the time of year and the friend there are several scenarios or itineraries I think of for a week long visit. San Diego offers diverse topography so checking out some of the beaches, mountains and deserts might be included in the visit. First and foremost I would take my best friend to visit the Arts District at Liberty Station where my art studio is located. Once there, we might stroll along the harbor and afterward grab a sandwich at Con Pane or a pizza at Buona Forchetta. Or perhaps a glass of wine and charcuterie board at Carruth Urban Winery. Liberty Station has it all. Renting a studio at Liberty Station is like having a resort membership. There’s plenty of amazing art and artist that would be fun for any visitor to experience. Of course I’d have to spend some time with my friend at Del Mar Beach. This is one of my favorite beaches because you can walk for miles and stop in at Jakes for a nosh. Next on the itinerary, a day trip to Julian for a hike on Canyon Oak Trailhead and then quench our appetite with apple pie ala mode or wine tasting. During this visit we would also fit in a few hours here and there playing pickleball at Rancho Arbolitos with my pickleball pals. And finally, round out the visit with a stop at Hotel Del Coronado to take in the history and fun atmosphere.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There have been many people who love, support and influence me, certainly my parents and sisters. During my Coast Guard career, I met and married the love of my life, Michelle. She is an amazingly loving, supportive and nurturing spouse. So much of my journey, especially after the Coast Guard has been inspired by Michelle who continues to encourage me in my artwork.
